MARCH MADNESS TAG DAY FOR ROOM 19: Weds., May 30th
IMPORTANT: FIELD DAY PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Each homeroom needs two parent volunteers for Field Day, June 12th. Our homeroom may not be able to participate in all the games if we do not have two parent volunteers. Parent volunteers should arrive at SPN at 8:15 am on Field Day to become familiar with the games they will supervise. Each parent will supervise one game or activity. If you would like to volunteer, please email me as soon as possible.
Thank you for your help in making Field Day a fun and organized day!
FINAL EXAMS
Please see the Test Schedule page of this website for the final exam schedule.
6th GRADE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
The 6th graders did a great job on sharing their research and discussing their ideas as part of their very creative powerpoint presentations about The Great Chicago Fire. After the presentations the class voted as the "Chicago City Council" on what theory about the fire's cause they think is correct. Most students believe the fire was started by people playing cards in the O'Leary's barn, although many of the students believe that debris from a comet may have started the fire in Chicago as well as other fires in the region on the same night.
8th GRADE LIVING HISTORY PROJECT
On May 30th (during class time) the 8th graders will walk over and visit with residents of Sunrise Assisted Living (next door to SPN). The students will talk with the residents in small groups about the residents' personal experiences during the important events in modern history that the students have studied this year. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn first hand about the courage and sacrifices made by the older generation that we all continue to benefit from today.
8th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES SUPREME COURT PROJECT:
The eighth graders did a great job with their role play of the arguments before the Supreme Court for and against the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The students debated the issues while playing the part of either a Justice, clerk, attorney for the Obama administration, or attorney for the states opposing the law. By going through this process, the students can learned about the importance of checks and balances in our system of government while engaging in a debate on a current event.
A MESSAGE FROM MRS. HUNT:
Parents we are trying a new typing program during the month of May. This is for the 2nd thru 7th grade. The students are asked to access the program once a week at home and we will allow some time during computer class.
the web address is: www.typingagent.com
The log is their first name (all lowercase) and the first initial of their last name. Next to the name they need to type @st.0p54
E.G. my log in would look like this: kathyh@st.0p54
The password is: spn along with the number of the computer that they use in the lab. I am showing this to the students as they come to me this week. If they have any questions ask them to come see me or email me at k.huntspn@gmail.com
thanks for you help with this program.
SCHOOL CHOICE
As part of a persuasive writing project for ELA, our homeroom has written letters to State Representative Gerber in support of passing legislation allowing the use of tuition vouchers. These vouchers would provide parents more choice in selecting a good school, such as a Catholic school, for their children. The students did an excellent job writing persuasive letters on this important topic.
PEACEFUL SCHOOLS
As part of the Peaceful Schools program at SPN, our homeroom has class meetings at least once a week. The meetings provide students with the opportunity to practice social skills such as constructive problem solving and conflict resolution strategies. Our goal is to have a safe, friendly, caring, and respectful classroom and school community.
REPORT CARDS
A brochure explaining the new format of the report card was included with your child’s 1st trimester report card. Please be aware that the interpretation codes are different on each side of the report card. The left hand side with Personal & Social Growth and Effort & Study Skills remains the same. The right hand side of the report card that indicates Academic Progress has changed. One grade is given for ELA and one for Math with four subcategories listed under each. To assess progress in these subcategories, a + or a √ is indicated. The + indicates that the student has mastered expectations/concepts at this level. The √ indicates the mastery of the concept is still in progress.
The specific standards assessed and the types of assignments given will vary in each trimester. This means that a student who has achieved mastery in a subcategory in the first trimester may not necessarily achieve mastery in that subcategory in the other two trimesters.
NetTrekker
Saint Philip Neri School has a yearly subscription to a safe web directory called netTrekker. Each student has created a user account to access this website for school work and homework. Please read the netTrekker pamphlet your child has brought home. If you have any questions, please contact me or Mrs. Hunt, our computer teacher. Mrs. Hunt's email address is k.huntspn@gmail.com.
HOME AND SCHOOL BOARD
The Home and School Board is looking for dedicated parents, who are either new to our school or have younger children in school here, to help carry on the fine work of the long time board members who now have older children in the school. The Home and School Association and the Home and School Board work hard to raise money for important needs of our school, such as the new playground, physical education equipment, student assemblies, etc. Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering to serve on the Home and School Board and I will direct you to the people who can help you get started. Thank you!
Mrs. Kaiser's
Homework Policy
The purpose of homework is to provide students with the opportunity to practice skills and review and apply lessons taught in class. Homework also teaches responsibility, perseverance, self-discipline, personal study skills and habits, and time management. Finally, homework is a valuable way to inform parents about what their children are learning in school.
Homework completion is the student's, not the parent's, responsibility. However, students or parents should let the teacher know whenever there are special circumstances interfering with completing homework assignments.
When homework is collected, it will be graded as a quiz.
A demerit will be given to students when they do not bring their homework to class on the day it is due.
When tests are sent home to be signed, students will receive a demerit if the test is not returned within two days.
If a major assignment is not handed in on time, three points will be taken off the student's grade for the assignment. If the student hands in the assignment more than two days after it is due, the student will receive a failing grade (60%) for the assignment.
Homework is a way for students to invest in their future. The greater the effort a student puts into his or her homework, the better the student can understand new ideas and reach his or her potential.
LUNCH / RECESS BEHAVIOR FORM
The purpose of this form is for the school to communicate to parents any misbehavior by their child during lunch or lunch recess. When students bring home this form, it is very important that parents sign it and have their child return the form to school the next day. Thank you.
