Mrs. Barlow's "Other" Life

WOW! My ninth year at St. Philip Neri School! I hope that means I love
SPN as much as it loves me! It is a job which combines my two favorite
things: children and sports.

I was born in Rosemont, PA and attended School of the Holy Child and
Merion Mercy Academy. I received my B.S. in Health and Physical Education
at Ursinus College where I also met my husband, Brian. I continued at West
Chester University for graduate studies. My first teaching position was at
St. Denis in Havertown (three days a week) and St. Matthias in Bala Cynwyd
(two days a week). I taught for four years, and then started our family of
four sons: Matthew,a second year law student at Univ. of Maryland; Michael, a
Senior +1? at Temple University; Thomas, a Sophomore at Univ. of Pitt.
Johnstown; Stephen, a Freshman at Montco. This was my fifteen
year “sabbatical.”
While the boys were younger, I was very active in school PTO’s and I
also substitute taught in many area parish schools as well as the Colonial
School District. I also teach at St. Teresa of Avila, in Norristown on
Thursdays and Fridays. My hobbies include: cooking, reading, playing
tennis, golf, singing, needlework, traveling and spectating at many sporting
events.
The most rewarding thing I do is spending time teaching, playing and
learning from children, yours and mine.

Goals and Philosophy

My goal in physical education is to emphasize the importance of learning
fitness for life so that students will become active, healthy and productive
adults. Physical education should stimulate the whole student, physically,
mentally, socially, and emotionally. Statistically, more than half of
American adults are overweight, inactive and unhealthy. Students will learn
many different activities to provoke their desire to remain active throughout
their adult lives, such as: bocce, croquet, golf and bowling. This year’s
curriculum includes many cooperative games that require working together to
achieve a common goal; a skill that is useful on and off the courts/fields.
It is my philosophy that gym class is for every student: the football player,
cheerleader, violinist, computer genius and the bookworm. Everyone is on an
equal playing field with exercise and FUN for everyone. The complete
emphasis is on the student’s effort and attitude, not the result or
outcome.

Everything I Learned in Life I Learned in P.E.
