Miscellaneous Reminders

Here are some reminders so we continue to have a successful year in 3rd grade!

-Reading is like baseball...the more you practice the better you will get!
Encourage daily reading and read with your child. The love of reading can be
contagious!

*Note Change: The following subjects are taught but not graded at this level:
SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, art, music, physical education/health, and technology.

The curriculum change to the Common Core State Standards this year has
prompted a change in our report card and grading. The grading system in Grade
3 will continue to be letter grades but social studies and science will no
longer be graded subjects. Social studies and science will continue to be
taught and integrated into other parts of the standards. Grading will begin in
fourth grade.

The reading emphasis in Kindergarten through Grade 3 is “learning to read”
whereas starting in Grade 4 the emphasis shifts to” reading to learn”. Both
social studies and science continue to be very important subjects for third
grade. Learning to read in these content areas is essential for understanding
certain skills that are necessary for academic success.

-You will notice the following changes to what you see on RVSGradebook:

Instead of seeing the number of points earned/total of possible points, you
will see a points value. This is how that type of assessment is weighted for
that subject. For the assessment grade, you will see a number 1-6, which is
equivalent to the letters grades you are used to.

6=O  5=VG  4=G   3=S   2= I   1=U

EX: On an actual spelling test you'll see: 18/20 VG

On Gradebook, it will be recorded as: 5

On the report card, your child will still receive letter grades. Thanks for
your patience and understanding while we transition to the new format. Please
contact me if you have any questions.

THINKCENTRAL.COM: Check out our link for ThinkCentral.com. This website has
valuable resources for our reading series, such as our weekly stories in an
interactive form, weekly skills, robust words, and other support materials.
Just go to the link on the left-hand side of this page to ThinkCentral and
directions are posted for you gain access to the site. Everyone is
registered and is recommended to take advantage of this helpful resource.
***There will be times when the students will need to go to Thinkcentral.com
for homework assignments.

-Emergency Numbers: In case of an emergency or school closing, listen for
either of these numbers: St. Philip 343 Colonial 305

-Please put your child's name inside ALL articles of clothing with a
PERMANENT marker.

-All homework should be written neatly in cursive.

-BIRTHDAYS are special and fun. If your child would like to celebrate his/her
birthday with the class, please let me know in advance so we don't have more
than one celebration on a given day. There are 26 students in our class (and
don't forget me!!) If your child is having a birthday party, we ask that
invitations be mailed and not handed out at school. Thank you for honoring
this request.

-Appropriate Winter Clothing: Due to the cold temperatures and windy
conditions, students must wear winter coats, gloves, and hats to school.
Sweatshirts are NOT considered winter coats. If they are not dressed
appropriately for the weather, they will not be permitted to go outside for
lunch recess. Thanks for understanding.

-Check out our "class photos" link for some recent photos of our terrific
third graders!

-Don't forget to visit RVSGradebook.com to check your child's grades.

-Please check your child's behavior calendar and initial it each night.
Remember: smiley face means it was a great day, no comment means there were
no concerns, and a red check means there was an incomplete homework
assignment, behavior issue, or another concern that needed to be addressed.
Receiving reinforcement from home is helpful to your child and me. Thanks
