Calendar is a Math skill; so every day we mark our day of the week, the weather and count up our days in school. To prepare for the day, the children will do a mental math drill, mad minute (review drill of basic addition or subtraction facts), problem of the day or maintenance sheet (a short review of different skills).
Our curriculum this year is a review and extension of first grade skills learned. One important aspect is addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers with and without regrouping (carrying and borrowing). Please go over each night basic addition and subtraction facts with your child. We do learn various strategies to remember, but old-fashioned memorization of facts is still the best way. Try to discourage the use of fingers.
The children will usually have Math homework three or four times a week. I do not usually send home the Math book, but the children may bring their books home at any time. I hope to let you know at least a week ahead when there will be a test. We continue to use the same Math series this year. There will be a difference because of the Common Core State Standards. We will not use the pages consecutively - we will move around according to the standard that we are following. The publisher has an internet site that you might be able to use for review at any time. www.sadlier-oxford.com
