This week in math we will be reviewing telling time on analog/digital clocks, and associating different activities with morning, afternoon and evening hours. This has helped the children gain a greater awareness of their environment. We will also be comparing objects by size. Underlying all measurement is the concept of comparison. Comparison is also a prerequisite skill to evaluating algebraic equations. Visually and directly comparing two objects by size precedes comparing an object to a unit of measurement. This week our selection in reading "Homes Around the World" introduces the children to the genre of informational text. Our central focus will be on what kinds of homes do people around the world build? Tomorrow will will "picture walk" and make a connection with the following Amazing Words: home, roof, tools, apartment, city, and country. After listening to the story we will be making a word poster listing materials used to build homes around the world. (mud, logs, grass, wood). We will also be making a Venn Diagram to compare animal and human homes **************************************************************************** **** This week we will be taking our field trip to the Please Touch Museum. Please check under the announcements page for directives. Our Volunteer Breakfast is on Friday. All of the classes will be performing for the parents. We have been hard at work rehearsing. *************************************************************************** From the weekend we returned in a happy mood to learn that very soon we would have our own brood. In our classroom incubator, eggs will lay in a batch, within a few days we learned they will hatch. We can't wait to meet our sweet little peeps. We'll get to watch them eat, drink, and sleep. We'll keep them warm, and they'll get plenty of love. We thank our Lord for his gift from above. In addition to the excitement of receiving our chicks, we were treated to a fabulous Earth Day lesson-compliments of Mr. & Mrs. Lemheney from K19. Part of the presentation included: slicing a watermelon and viewing the seeds. Next the children were given a damp paper towel in which seeds were placed. Over the next few days, they will make observations about the changes that occur. Next our little gardeners were each given a pot, soil, and a marigold seed to plant. Lastly they decorated a cup with their likeness, and added grass seed. The children are very excited to watch as "green hair" will grow out of the top of their "head". Many thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Lemhenny for spending the morning with us, and providing all of the children with the supplies they needed to experience such a wonderful lesson. "V" week would not be complete without the making of a volcano which will take place at the end of this week.
