Do you go on any field trips in 3rd grade?
Yes. We will be going to Crystal Cave May 29th.
Do you need chaperones for the field trips?
For many field trips we do. When we get closer to the field trip
date(s) I will be sending home a form where you can indicate if
you would like to be a chaperone. Unfortunately, many times there
are more volunteers then spaces available. I'll do my best to
give everyone at least one opportunity to chaperone, but I can't
guarantee anything. Also, in order to volunteer at school
functions, you will need to have your clearance forms turned in
to the office.
Can my child bring in cough drops?
Yes. Just make sure that written permission is sent in along with
it for the nurse.
Are the students allowed to have water bottles?
I would rather they didn't. Many times they serve as a
distraction and the students end up having to go to the bathroom
more often. We do take a few breaks during the day where students
can get drinks from the fountain.
Do the students write in cursive in 3rd grade?
We will slowly use more and more cursive throughout the first
trimester. When we return from the winter break most
classwork and assignments will need to be done in cursive.
However, if they feel comfortable, they may write in cursive at
the start of the school year.
Do you use parent volunteers on a regular basis?
Not usually. However, every now and then I may need an extra set
of hands for something (ex. science experiment), so if you'd like
to help, send me an e-mail and I'll put your name on the list.
Also, in order to volunteer at school functions, you will need to
have your clearance forms turned in to the office.
Do I need to inform the office if my child is going to be absent?
Yes. If you'd like to also send me an e-mail as well with any
specific instructions (where to send homework etc.), that would
be fine.
How do after school activities work?
There aren't as many after school activities available for 3rd
grade students as there were for 4th and 5th graders, but there
are a few. If your child is staying after school for an
activity/class, I'd ask you to please send in a short note with
your child EVERY day the activity/class is being
held. In this way I know where the student is after school, the
office has a record of where the student is after school, and the
student has the peace of mind knowing how they will get home that
day. If you are picking your child up from the activity, they are
usually dismissed at the back of the school.
Can my child bring in a toy for recess?
The staff at Shafer was informed that no toys (action figures,
electronic games, stuffed animals, etc.) should be taken out of
school bags for either indoor or outdoor recess. Any toys or
games must be kept in school bags until the student arrives at
their after school destination.
What happens if my child forgot something in school? Can they come back?
Students are allowed back into the building to retrieve forgotten
items until 3:00 PM.
Do we have snack in third grade?
Yes. We have snack in the morning. The students may bring in
something small to eat. An approved snack list was sent home at
the beginnig of the year. A copy of the letter can be viewed and

When can the students buy snack in the cafeteria?
Each third grade class has a designated day for snack in the
cafeteria. This year our day is:
How should I send in the Scholastic Book Order?
Please include the payment (check if at all possible) and the
order form in an envelope with the students name and "Book Order"
on the front. If it's not too much trouble, please double check
that the correct amount is included in the envelope. Thanks.
