Each year the South Central Reading Council donates money to a community
organization that promotes literacy. If you know of an organization worthy of
being nominated to receive this award, please e-mail the organization's name
and contact information to southcentralreading@hotmail.com or use the e-mail
link at the top of the page.
2009 Recipient - Olivia's House
2010 Recipient - Ethiopia Reads
This year’s SCRC Community Service donation will be going to a community
far from our own. Ethiopia Reads is an organization whose mission is to
create a reading culture by connecting children with books. They believe
that “education is the key to improving the lives of the next generations of
Ethiopians” and that books are the key to this mission. The founder of
Ethiopia Reads, Yohannes Gebregeorgis, was named one of CNN’s “Top 10 Heroes
of the Year” in 2008 for his work. Author Jane Kurtz (author of Lanie:
American Girl 2010 and many children’s books about Ethiopia) helped gain
support for the mission also. This donation will put books in the hands of
children who would otherwise never be able to experience children’s
literature. We are proud to be able to be a part of this mission! Please
