Summer Reading - Grade 7

 SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT  STUDENTS ENTERING 7TH GRADE (2009-2010)

TWO NOVELS WILL BE READ OVER THE SUMMER VACATION.

First > Read Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt
	It is suggested that students keep a handwritten summary of 
this book by chapter/section, as well as any additional handwritten 
notes.  Upon your return to school, there will be a test on 
the novel.  You will be permitted to use your handwritten book notes 
for the test.  You will not be graded on your notes.  Any notes used 
for the test must be your original handwritten notes; you will not 
be permitted to use any cliff notes/spark notes or typed notes of any 
kind.    

Second > Read any one of the following books:
	
	Something Upstairs, by Avi  When he moves from Los Angeles 
to Providence, Rhode Island, Kenny discovers that his new house is 
haunted by the spirit of a black slave boy who asks Kenny to return 
with him to the nineteenth century to prevent his murder by slave 
traders.

	Walk Two Moons, by Creech  After her mother leaves home 
suddenly, thirteen year-old Sal and her grandparents take a car trip 
retracing her mothers route.  Along the way, Sal recounts the story 
of her friend, Phoebe, whose mother also left.

	Never Mind!:  a twin novel, by Avi and Rachel Vail  
Fraternal twins, Edward and Meg, have nothing in common, so they are 
just as shocked as everyone else when Megs hopes for popularity and 
Edwards mischievous schemes coincidentally collide in a hilarious 
showdown.

	Chasing Vermeer, by Blue Baliett  When seemingly unrelated 
and strange events start to happen and a precious Vermeer painting 
disappears, eleven-year-olds Petra and Calder combine their talents 
to solve an international art scandal.

	Millions, by Frank Cottrell Boyce  After their mother dies, 
two brothers find a huge amount of British money which they must 
spend quickly before England switches to the new European currency, 
but they disagree on what to do with it.  

	The Secret Language of Girls, by Frances ORoarke Dowell  
Marylin and Kate have been friends since nursery school, but when 
Marylin becomes a middle school cheerleader and Kate begins to 
develop other interests, their relationship is put to the test.

	Flipped, by Wendelin Van Draanen  In alternating chapters, 
two teenage describe their how their feelings about themselves, each 
other, and their families have changed over the years.  

	Travel Team, by Mike Lupica  After he is cut from his 
travel basketball team  the very same team that his father once led 
to national prominence  twelve-year-old Danny Walker forms his own 
team of cast-offs that might have a shot at victory.  

	Maniac Magee, by Spinelli  After his parents die, Jeffrey 
Lionel Magees life becomes legendary; he accomplishes athletic and 
other feats.  

	A Long Way From Chicago, by Peck  Two teenagers go to stay 
with their eccentric grandmother in her small Illinois town during 
the Great Depression.  


	Students will complete various assignments for the second 
novel upon their return to school.  It is suggested that students 
keep a summary of this book by chapter/section.
