Listening and Speaking
This year marks are to be specifically given on listening and speaking skills. All ELA grades -- writing, reading, listening and speaking, and language -- will be averaged together for one general ELA grade at the end of the trimester.
Assessments for listening and speaking will be obtained from oral presentations and responses to oral selections. General observations of attentiveness and speaking (responding to questions, group discussions, etc.),and following directions in the classroom will also be taken into consideration. It may be helpful to read a short selection to your child and then ask him to answer questions relevant to the selection. Have them take notes on what they think is important -- main ideas, details, sequence of events. These are skills we are working on in the classroom.
