Parents,

We are getting ready to start a new unit is Science. The unit is on Tobacco,
Alcohol and Drugs. Please take the time to discuss with your child what we
talk about in school. This is a topic of great interest to them at this
point, and I feel that discussing it will help them make the right choice
later in life. In addition, we will have a guest speaker from the tobacco
company to talk about the hazards of smoking. We will also watch a few
videos that go with the topic. The students will also design a poster about
the hazards of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

In Math, group 6, we are learning how to read and write algebraic
expressions. This doesn't always seem very difficult, but does prove to be
challenging. It will certainly help our students when reading word
problems. Even at this level, it is so important for the students to know
their multiplication tables. Some of the silliest mistakes are made because
they multiplied incorrectly.

In Math 7, we are learning how to apply the inverse operation of a algebraic
expression in Multip., division, addition and subtraction. It is important
for the students to learn the steps to these problems even when they are able
to do them with mental math. Again, it is important for each child to
practice their multiplication tables if they are rusty.

In Social Studies we are now working from a binder. We do refer to the book
for addition information. The worksheets in the binder do coordinate with
the Archdiocese guidelines for 6th grade Social Studies. I have the students
highlight any important information. For test and quizzes, the students will
study directly from the binder. We will be having a quiz on what we have
done so far next Wednesday or Thursday, Dec. 2 - 3. I will let them know.
Also, each student has picked a country in which they would like to research
about how they celebrate Christmas. They received the guidelines and rubric
for this assignment on Friday, Nov. 20th. This is due Friday, December 4th
