Happy New Year! While that greeting sounds strange, Nov. 29, 2009 begins our new church year, the First Sunday in Advent. This is a time of joyful waiting and expectation. Just as the world waited so long ago for the coming of the Savior, we too await His arrival. Let us take the time to prepare for His coming and not hurry the season along too quickly. Anticipation of the holiday can be just as exciting as the holiday itself.
The first Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet's Candle reminding us that Jesus is coming. The second Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. The third Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the Shepherd's Candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. The fourth Sunday symbolizes Peace with the Angel's Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men". (http://www.catholiccompany.com)
As you bake the cookies, buy the presents, and trim the tree remind your children that they too are preparing for Christmas. As Christians we have a special gift to give to the world this season. We know that the world is not a perfect place. It has plenty of beauty, but that's not all. Our world is plagued with fear, sickness, violence, loneliness and oppression, to name a few. Advent is all about hope. God is coming, coming in a manger, coming in our lives and coming at the end of time. The when and the how of these comings remain uncertain. What is certain is that God will come. This Advent let us wait together with anticipation and joy!

May you have a Happy and Holy Holiday Season.

NEWSFLASH

Sign up for NewsFlash on our website (www.staq.org) and receive an e-mail when school is closed due to snow. NewsFlash is a service provided through Teacherweb. When school is cancelled, I will be able to send an e-mail to all parents who subscribe to the service. This is a free service. However, you will need a password to sign-up. Call the office, ask a teacher… However, I will not put it in print. I do not want children having access to this service.

CARES

We will continue our Extended Day Program entitled CARES. It is open daily until 6 PM for grades K through fifth, exceptions are made where there is a special circumstance and those considerations are made by both the principal and the pastor. Generally speaking, older students do not want to be in CARES with the younger children and have no one their age for socialization. We will also have CARES on Early Dismissal Days except when it precedes a holiday. CARES before a holiday will be decided as the holiday arises. For those parents who need before school CARES, this will be held in the school. All forms for CARES are on our website.

WINTER UNIFORM

The winter uniform regulation began on November 2nd. Please check your handbook for uniform regulations which means shorts or sneakers may not be worn. Some girls are also wearing a uniform that is too short because it is rolled, hemmed, or they have outgrown it. Please remedy this situation. Remember, girls were given the option of wearing uniform pants. A few of our girls have taken that option and they look very nice. If someone is not wearing the uniform pants but comes to school with pants under their uniform because of the cold, that is acceptable. However, students will need to take them off during the day. Hoodies are not part of the original uniform regulation. Last year, students were given the option of wearing the St. Thomas hoodie, their gym sweatshirt, or a plain navy hoodie over their uniform because the building can be cold in some rooms. NO OTHER SWEATSHIRT IS PERMITTED. Students will be required to remove nonregulation sweatshirt/hoodies regardless of the weather.
