What school supplies will my child need?

Our school district does provide most of the necessary supplies
to start the school year. On the first day, the children will
receive: crayons, a pencil, scissors, a glue stick, a clipboard,
a big eraser, and the textbooks we need. There are some
suggested (optional) items listed on our Supply List. Throughout
the year as the children use things up we may also need to
replenish these. Thank you.

What is "Rock-N-Read" ?

This is a daily homework assignment and not optional. Directions
will come home the first week of school, as well as the first monthly book
log. Try to find books they can read independently. More challenging
picture books may be used to start the year. As the year progresses I expect
the child to primarily use Chapter Books.

Why does my child have a checkbook?

Using a checkbook with my 3rd grade class is a new concept I am
developing. Their checkbook serves a few purposes. It is a daily
motivator to come to school, do homework, and try their best on tests.
It is a positive reinforcer of appropriate behaviors as they can be
rewarded with cash to be deposited into their checkbook.
They can also be fined and lose cash for a number of reasons.

Daily deposits and withdrawals also give them lots of math practice
adding and subtracting, and using money. I am hoping the children
will enjoy this as much as they did the ticket system I used in past
years with first grade.

How can we celebrate birthdays in school?

While the school district has a wellness policy that doesn't
permit birthday treats, it doesn't mean we can't celebrate your
child's special day. We will still sing to your child and do
something special that day. Also, children with summer birthdays
can celebrate in June before school lets out.Everyone will also
have a chance to pick something from the birthday box.

Non-food items may be passed out to the class, if you choose.
Some examples: pencils, book marks, stickers, tattoos,
erasers, etc.

** If you aren't sure what is allowed please contact me at
school. **

What is Student of the Week?

Mrs. Bolognini, our guidance counselor randomly selects students
to be Students of the Week. They will be announced on the
morning newscast. Everyone will have a special week sometime this
year. They will have a good citizen job to complete as assigned
by Mrs. B.

In our classroom, they will be the "Rock Star of the Week". A
special packet will come home to be completed and returned to
share with us. It helps us to learn more about them. They may
also add photos to our Star chart. It is their week to do a
daily show and tell. They may bring one special thing per day (a
favorite book, toy, or stuffed animal, also medals/trophies,
special collections, etc.).

What is in the Friday Folders?

** Not sure if I'll use the Friday Folder the first 2 weeks. **
The Friday Folder serves as an important communication tool for
us. All tests will come home in here to be signed and returned.
I hold everything until Friday so you become used to looking in
one spot for important things. There is also an area
where you can make comments.
