COURSE SYLLABUS
Instructor: Mrs. Baltz
Welcome to Honors Biology! In this course we will explore the interesting and
diverse world of Biology. We will study Biology for its complexity as well as
its beauty. You will learn to relate course material to the world around you.
By the end of the year you will gained essential knowledge for life and for
any Biological Science courses. The will be an intensive course and will
require your dedication and hard work. If you follow directions, try your
best, and complete assignments, you will have a successful and enjoyable
experience in this class.
Course Topics:
1. Introduction
2. Chemical Basis of Live
3. Ecology
4. Ecosystems and Communities
5. Populations
6. Structure of Cells
7. ATP and Photosynthesis
8. Cellular Respiration
9. Mitosis and Meiosis
10. DNA, RNA, and Protein Synthesis
11. Genetics
12. Evolution
13. Classification
14. Animals
15. Plants
16. Monerans and Viruses
17. Protists
Requirements:
1. All students must come to class prepared to work. Bring your covered
textbook, pen/pencil, notebook and any completed assignments. A three-
ring binder is highly recommended to organize handouts, articles, and
homework.
2. All students will participate in class and will respect the rights of
others to participate.
3. Appropriate behavior is expected every day. Be considerate to all others.
Derogatory comments and physical contact will not be tolerated.
4. All students must be prepared to begin class on time-not after the bell
rings. You are to be in your assigned seat, to have your notebook open
and begin working when the bell rings. If you are late to class you will
receive a detention.
5. Only currently assigned biology work can be done during class time.
6. Follow all the rules in the code of conduct.
Classroom Procedures:
1. Anytime you need to leave the room, you must ask permission. Only in
extreme emergencies should you ask to use the restroom. You will be given 6
Lav Passes to use a marking period. It is up to you as to when and how you
would like to use these passes. You will be given extra credit towards
your marking period grade for each pass you do not use. It is to your
advantage to hand in as many of these passes as possible at the end of each
marking period.
2. Most needs (paper, pencil, etc.) should be taken care of before class.
Sharpen your pencil before class begins and if you have something to throw
away, do it on your way out.
3. Personal questions regarding grades, make-up work, detentions, etc. will
not be answered during class time. See me before or after class to address
these concerns.
4. Class is dismissed when I dismiss the class, not when the bell rings.
Grading:
Students will be tested on their knowledge by means of homework, quizzes
(both announced and unannounced), tests, labs, projects, in-class assignments,
and class discussions. Students will be graded on a point system. Keep track
of your grade on edline. Please be aware that there may be some lag time
before I have larger projects graded and entered into the computer. Also,
when missing assignments are eventually turned into zeros it may cause a
student's marking period grade to drop significantly. Therefore, it is
extremely beneficial to makeup work in an efficient manner. NOTE - Late
homework will not be accepted and will result in a grade of “zero”.
Absenteeism:
1. If you are absent from school, you may turn in an assignment for credit
within the allotted time as per your district handbook (the number of days
you are absent). It is up to you to show this work to me; I will not ask
you for it. To identify missing assignments, you are to consult edline.
If you do not show me the assignment within the allotted time, you will
receive a zero. Work assigned prior to your absence is due upon your
return.
2. If you are absent from a class due to a field trip, activity, or sporting
event, you are required to see me with your homework that day to receive
credit. This includes handing in any assignments or projects. In
addition, you must get the homework assigned that day, as it will be due
with the rest of the class.
3. Make-up tests and quizzes will not be administered during class time.
These must be taken before school, after school, or during study hall. If
these are not made up in the district’s allotted time, you will receive a
zero. You must schedule these times in advance and obtain a pass from me.
4. If you know you are going to miss class the day before a test, but were in
class when the test was assigned, you are responsible for taking the test
when you return.
Science Department Academic Intervention Program:
In an effort to improve academic performance in science classes, the science
department will be implementing an academic intervention program. The
procedure for the program is as follows:
1. Students whose current marking period grade falls below 70% at any point
in the term will be notified that they are expected to participate in the
program.
2. The academic intervention program will be offered before and/or after
school for 30 minutes one day each week. Students are expected to attend a
minimum of one session per week.
3. Students must come to program sessions with required classroom
materials: notes, textbook, writing utensils, etc. Any student who comes
unprepared or behaves inappropriately will be asked to leave.
Consequences:
1. First Offense - Verbal warning or teacher detention.
a. Teacher detentions for being late or unprepared are usually 15 minutes
after school.
b. Detentions received for misbehavior may be 30 to 45 minutes long.
2. Second Offense – Teacher detention, student conference and a possible
phone call home.
3. Third Offense – Teacher detention and phone call home
4. Fourth Offense – Offense for same behavior results in a conduct referral
every time that behavior is repeated.
*Serious Offenses May Warrant an Immediate Conduct Referral!!
Student Success:
I am more than willing to work with you before or after school in order to
help you with your Biology lessons. Keeping up with work as it is assigned,
completing homework, participating in class, and asking for help are positive
steps you can take to ensure your success in Biology!
I’m looking forward to a rewarding and exciting school year with you! Do not
hesitate to ask any questions you may have regarding this syllabus or
questions you think of throughout the year.
Good Luck and Enjoy the Year!
