When do you assign homework?

Homework is assigned as necessary to practice and review the
skills that are taught in school. At least one homework
assignment is usually assigned daily during the school week.
Homework is not assigned on weekends or holidays, as I feel
that it is time for your child to spend with family and to have
fun being kids! :) Each of our classrooms has a homework board
where assignments for all subjects are posted daily. We instruct
your child to copy the assignments into the planner that was
provided by the PTO. Please be sure to check your chid's planner
and homework nightly. Thank you in advance!

What happens if my child forgets homework?

If your child’s homework is not completed on the day that it is
due, a homework slip will be sent home informing you of the
missing assignment. This work is to be completed and sent in the
next day along with the signed homework slip. Frequently
forgotten homework will result in a lowered grade. However, if
an emergency occurs that prevents your child from completing the
homework assignment, please send in a note so I know that you are
aware of your child's obligation. This will allow your child the
opportunity to turn in the completed assignment the next day and
receive full credit for it.

Why do I have to sign test papers?

I send home chapter tests in major subjects for your signature so
you are aware of how your child did on the test. I must get the
test back and keep it on file.

How is Reading graded?

Each story unit takes about a week to teach and it teaches
specific skills. The reading grade is obtained by tests that
measure comprehension and the skills that were taught. For each
story, there is:
1.) A Selection Test (a test on story vocabulary and story
comprehension)
2.) A Skills Test (a test on the specific skills learned as we
read the story)
3.) A Final Theme Test (a test that is given about every month
that covers all the skills taught in the total theme)
From time to time, I will also assign reading projects as a form
of alternate assessment.
Also, we are not allowed to send home any reading materials.

Will Spelling and Writing appear on my child's report card?

Spelling is no longer a grade on the 4th grade report card.
However, spelling words are taught in conjunction with the
reading units and are practiced with our writing pieces.

Writing is graded and will appear on your child's report card.
We work on different types of writing prompts and edit them.
These writing prompts are graded.

How is English graded?

Each Reading story concentrates on a specific English skill. This
skill is reinforced by our English book. Board work, workbook
pages and worksheets allow the children to practice these skills.
Grades are taken from these exercises and an English unit test.

How is Social Studies graded?

Your child is assigned homework at the end of each lesson (each
lesson takes about 2-3 days.) I check that it has been done and
we review it in class. Your child should correct any mistakes at
this time. I give a vocabulary test and a "closed book"
chapter test. I give several types of tests and projects so that your child
has many opportunities to do well in this Social Studies.

How is Science graded?

Your child is assigned homework on each lesson. I check that it
has been done and we review it in class. Your child should
correct any mistakes at this time. Take home tests are also given
at various times and are graded for a mark. A vocabulary test and a "closed book"
test are given for each chapter. Projects and alternative assignments are also given and graded.
This gives your child many opportunities to do well in Science.

What should I do if my child is going to miss school?

If you know that your child will be absent because of a vacation
or an appointment, please make arrangements to get the
assignments before he/she leaves. Each day your child misses a
great deal of work. Only the most important will be assigned. If
the absence is for a week or longer, some work will have to be
made up when he/she returns so the necessary skills can be taught.

What's your classroom discipline policy?

Students are expected to follow classroom rules. Everyone has a
post-it note on his or her desk. If a student is not following a
rule, they are asked to give him or herself a check mark. After
two check marks a student will not earn his or her sticker for
that day. After three check marks a student loses 10 minute of recess.
Everyone is rewarded for good behavior! If a student earns 5 stickers for the
week, they get a special treat. Every week, we start fresh and
get a new post-it note. (I've borrowed this idea from another teacher and
the children and I love it!)

What is Homeworkopoly?

Homeworkopoly is a fun game that the students get to play Friday
afternoon before dismissal if they completed all of their homework
for the week. Once they reach the end of the gameboard, they get
to pick from the Treasure Chest and start the game all over again.
It's a fun, great way to get kids to motivated!

Who teaches what?

Mrs. Peppe is my co-teacher. We both teach our own reading
classes. We work together and teach Math and Science to our class.
The class receives Social Studies instruction from Mrs. Przybyla
and Mrs. Peppe. Mrs. Flickinger is the Title 1 Reading instructor.
I teach Social Studies to Mrs. Bonomo's homeroom.
