Happy Holidays To Everyone!!!!
Enjoy your Christmas vacation! Remember School reopens on Tuesday, January
3,2012.
Keep READING and PRACTICING your MATH FACTS over the holiday!!!!!
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to a bright new year in 4th grade. My name is Deedra Porfirio, and I
will be your child's fourth grade teacher for this year. I would like to take
this opportunity to give you some useful information about fourth grade.
** Fourth grade is more challenging for students and requires more
responsibility from them. Here are some helpful tips to remember throughout
the year.**
The students will be using the computers at school, and they also can be using
Study Island and Odyssey on the computer at home!!!! There will be lessons
and activities that support and reinforce what the students are working on in
school.
Please help your children memorize their basic math facts. Have your child
practice their multiplication flashcards. The students will be taking timed
quick quizzes and using the Ipad for timed responses on basic facts. They
need to know their facts quickly. This is extremely important! We will be
working on more complex Math topics that involve these basic skills throughout
the year.
Also when there are tests, please help your children prepare and study for
them. Study guides are usually provided especially in Science.
If they learn their study skills now, future preparation for tests will be
easier.
Homework will usually be given on a daily basis. The students will have a
daily planner for assignments and a homework folder, Which they will bring
home with them daily. Please remember to check your child's planner and
homework folder daily!!!! There may be important notes or tests that have to
be signed and returned.
Reading Comprehension is extremely important also. The skills get more
difficult and challenging. Have your children read everyday to help with their
comprehension skills. If you would like extra practice on any skills please
let me know because I have a lot of material available. The students will
also be responsible for book reports this year.
The students will be preparing for Reading, Math, and Science PSSAs this year.
Science and Social Studies will also be letter grades this year. I will be
teaching the Science, and Mrs. Broda will teach the Social Studies. There will
be extra credit projects in Science. These projects are optional, but I do
encourage the students to complete them.
There will be class procedures and rules for the students to follow. They are
discussed on the first day of school. There will be positive rewards for
following the rules and consequences if the rules are not followed.
I have a packet of information I will be giving the parents at Get Acquainted
Night. It will include more detailed information about fourth grade for you.
I welcome and encourage parent involvement. Any questions or concerns please
contact me at the school or send in a note. I will be happy to address the
question or concern. I think good parent-teacher communication is important
in your child's learning environment. I will be sending home letters
throughout the year to keep you updated on what your child is learning and
doing in the classroom. I am looking forward to a new and exciting school
year with your child. I am also looking forward to seeing you at the Get
Acquainted Night in September.
Sincerely,
Deedra Porfirio
