sweatshirts.

*Math flash cards were sent home. Please practice all math facts.
First graders are learning a varitey of strategies and tools to solve
addition and subtraction problems. However, it is important to memorize basic
facts at this time. Tests are given on the i-pad. Students will be taking and
re-taking the facts tests to improve their scores.
*Have your child read every day!!
**Children may bring in a 'rainy day snack' for rainy days/snowy days.
***A zipbag for the minibooks sent home is a good storage idea. Let the mini
books (Phonics Library Books) accumulate so you have several for your child
to read to you.
*You may also want to include a zip bag in your child's binder to transport
the raffle slips to school.
$$$$$$$$$Please practice using money at home. IDEAS: Set up a store at home
and have your child buy things that cost a $1.00 or less. Let your child
exchange money with you. Use pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half
dollars, and a dollar bill.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
**Please have your child go on the The Odyssey computer program at
home to help reinforce skills we work on in the classroom!!!
LOOK AT WHAT WE'RE STUDYING:
READING - We have begun Theme 6 "Animal Adventures"
Reading Comprehension tested skills include: Story Sturcture, Noting
Details, and Making Predictions.
Phonics skills include: Long vowels o, u, and e. Final Blends: ft, lk, nt
and vowel pairs: ee, ea, ai, ay.
Students will be tested on the high-frequency words through fill in the
blank multiple choice sentences. High-frequency words are: morning, found,
shout, by, out, show, climb, cow, table, now, door, there, through, horse,
wall, been, evening, far, forest, goes, hungry, near, soon.
*Please review all workbook pages send home each night. Skills tests will
be given after each week and a Theme Test will be given at the end of each
Theme. A Reading Theme Test on Theme 6 Week 3 will be on Friday,
February 16, 2012. There will also be a Spelling and English/Grammer test.
*The Theme 6 Integrated Theme Test following Week 3 will be on Tuesday,
February 21.
The test will include a writing section. Your child will have to
write a Descriptive Story.
**A Description should inlude:
- A good beginning that tells what the description is about.
- Use your senses as you think about what you want to describe.
- Use words that tell how things look, feel, sound, taste, and smell.
- Use exact words: DO NOT WRITE - The cat is pretty.
DO WRITE - The cat has soft, white fur.
MATH - We are on Topic 12 - Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100.
A Test on Topic 12 will be on Wednesday, February 22.
***Please review all math papers sent home each night.
**Review any papers your child demonstrated difficulty with.
******Timed Basic Facts math tests have begun. Tests are given on our I-pad
Touch!!!

Students are given a "Take Home" binder to carry daily work
home at the beginning of the year. Papers on the "Keep at Home" side of the
folder are for students to keep. Papers on the "Return to School" side of
the folder should be returned the next day. Homework papers are also marked
with an H.W. at the top right hand corner.
Our class orders from Scholastic Book Club at the beginning of each
month throughout the year. Your child is under no obligation to order
books. Please pay by check, and make the check out to Scholastic Books.
If your child is absent an excuse is expected to be brought to school
when your child returns.
***If there are any change in plans going home please send in a note.
The desk fairy will be visiting our classroom throughout the year
looking for children with organized desks.
Children are encouraged to bring in a book to read to the class that
they have practiced reading at home. Reading rewards will be given to
our "Book Worm" readers!
