I know your child will have a lot of fun as they learn this year. I am committed to the importance of parental involvement. This is a vital part of first grade. I believe your child will get the best education possible when you and I work as a team.
Here are some of the activities that we will be covering for the month of February:
The month of
February
is going to be a busy one. The students will have to write a descriptive story. A descriptive story should have a good beginning that tells what the description is about. The students will use their senses as they think about what they want to describe. They will have to pick an animal and use the words that tell how it looks, feels, sounds, tastes and smells. Don't use the words: The animal is pretty and nice. Use the words: It has soft fur, a tail, and is huge. If you pick a skunk you can say that it is black and white, has soft fur, and will spray you if you get near it.
Math Quizzes and Tests will be announced the day before so you can review with your child. Please review all math papers sent home each night.
Math
- The students are still on Topic #10 - Counting and Number Patterns to 100. The children will be counting by 2, 5, and 10 to 100 on a hundred chart. Odd and even numbers will be taught and patterns on a hundred chart will be used. Topic #11 - Tens and Ones has four lessons in it. The students will be counting groups of 10 and leftovers, numbers made with tens, and adding tens and ones. At the end of the month the students will be on Topic #12- Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100. Students will learn 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, and 10 less. Making hundreds on a hundred chart, comparing numbers <, >, and = will be taught. Also using numbers before, after, and between will be taught.
Reading
- Theme 6 - Animal Adventure is in the second week of skills. The skills taught are: noting details, long e, ea, ee. Week #3 skills are making predictions, and the phonics skills are ai and ay.
Theme 6 test will follow. The writing piece for Theme 6 is a descriptive writing story. The students will have to pick an animal and describe it using sensory words. This writing piece will be taught on Wednesday, February 8th. Please practice this skill at home to help your child with the writing process.
Theme 7 - We Can Work It Out will begin on Thursday, February 16th. Some of the skills taught are: problem solving, sequence of events, and fantasy/realism. Long o spelled oa and ow is reviewed, oo, ew, ue, ou, ie, and igh phonemes are used. Compound words will be taught. The writing process will be solving a problem and finding the solution to it. Watch for this information in your child's homework folder at the end of February. This will take us into the eyes of March.
The children are using an Apple iPad 2 in our classroom to take Math Facts tests. Math Facts were sent home the first day of school in a packet. Please keep this paper and review with your child every night to help them do well when they take this test kind of test several times a week at school. Some of my students have already completed the first grade level and are now on the second grade level on the iPad 2. It is very exciting to watch them do this in school. I am very pleased with the results. I sent home a paper right before the Christmas break with some of the math facts that need to be improved and the time in seconds it takes to complete the test. Another paper was given during parent/teacher conferences for the second marking period on Tuesday, February 7th. Please review all math fact errors that the children have on that paper.
Please remember to review all vocabulary words and workbook pages sent home each night. Skills tests will be given after each week and a Theme test will end the Theme.
Please have your child go on the computer at home. The Odyssey computer program has alot of assignments that can help your child succeed in First Grade. They should be keeping up with the Theme we are working on in Reading and the Topic we are on in Math class. I also put some assignments on Science and Language Arts for the children to do at home. I check the computer every night and morning before school starts and announce in the classroom who went on the computer at home. I also reward those children who did go on the computer at home.
The Odyssey at home program is a bit hit. The children can't wait to hear me say that they went on the computer at home. They have enjoyed all the rewards that I have given them so far. Keep up the awesome work!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please try to attend PTO meetings. Our class wants to have the most parents in attendance to win a treat. They are held the first Wednesday in the month at 6:30 p.m.
The PTO meeting for the month of February is Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
Scholastic Book Orders are due on Friday, February 17th.
Sabatini's Pizza night for all JFK students is Thursday, February 2nd and every first Thursday in the school year. 10% of all money made that night goes to the JFK PTO. Just mention JFK so the PTO can earn the money.
Just a reminder to all parents......Please remember to sign all tests that go home with your child when they have a test. It is very important to review your child's mistakes with them.
Please empty green HW folder every night.
Only return signed tests and any HW given the night before.
I look forward to working with you this year!
I update this web page every month during the school year.
Please read with your child every night.
