Adjusting to First Grade

  1. Where does first grade get dismissed at the end of the day?
  2. What should I do if my child cries during the first few days of school
  3. I heard that first grade is doing snacktime this year. Is that true?
  4. How long should homework take to complete?

Where does first grade get dismissed at the end of the day?

If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, wait on

the right side of the building outside. Your first grader will be dismissed

from this door. If your child is usually a bus student, please send in a note

informing me of a change for that day.

What should I do if my child cries during the first few days of school

I know that it is heartbreaking to leave a crying child.

Starting a new school year can be overwhelming!

Give your child a hug, let him/her know you love him, wish him a great day, and let us

guide your child into the classroom. It is important that your

child sees you being strong and confident as he is nervous

and needs that confidence himself! It is rare

that a child will continue to cry once he is in the

classroom for more than a minute or two. He usually leaves

the tears behind once he sees that everyone is having a good time! I will do everything that

I can to help you and your child adjust to a new school year.

I heard that first grade is doing snacktime this year. Is that true?

Yes, we are doing snack. If you wish for your child to have a snack, please send in something

small. An appropriate snack might be a juice box and some animal crackers. Please keep it

simple and not very messy. We will be having snack in the classroom so we do

not want to leave big messes for the cleaning staff to deal with!

How long should homework take to complete?

Homework should not take more than 10 to 15 minutes in first

grade. It is a quick review of material that is learned. Most of the time it

will take 5 minutes. Most parents have told me that they find doing

homework at a set time every night from the very beginning helpful.

Homework will never be given on Fridays...
