through

February 12, 2010

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Reading:  Continuing our study of famous African Americans.  This week we will learn about Ruby Bridges using the book The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles.  We will think about the questions we have before, during, and after reading and about how asking questions before, during, and after reading helps the reader.  We will also consider how Ruby Bridges felt being the only African American child in an all white school.

Image Making:  We have begun making the collages that will serve to tell our stories!  This week we will continue our work cutting and pasting.

Writing:  Last week we wrote an acrostic poem about Rosa Parks.  This week we will revise our poems and then “publish” our work using Microsoft word.

We will also write a piece about Ruby Bridges “through her eyes”.

Spelling:  Continuing our work with “fabulous phonograms”!  This week we will study –ink, -ing, -ill, -in, and –ip.

Math:  Over the last several weeks we have been developing flexible methods for the computation of two and three digit numbers.  This week we will learn about and use the traditional algorithm for addition.  On Friday we will have a computation assessment.

Science:  This week we will continue learning about rocks by using screens to sort them into various sizes.  We will learn the names of small rock sizes, from sand to large pebbles.

Social Studies:  Getting ready for the winter Olympics!  Don’t forget, they start on Friday, February 12th!

Valentine’s Day

Your child is welcome to bring in Valentines for his or her classmates on Friday!  As part of the homework this week, your child will be making a special bag or box to hold cards from classmates.

Have a great vacation next week!
