The Fifth Grade News
We are a very busy fifth grade team! The students are working hard in
all their classes as new material and concepts are being introduces and
reinforced in all subjects. We all enjoyed the trip to the Providence
Performing Arts Center ! What an amazing opportunity to see professional
theatre! This trip helped prepare students for Reader’s Theatre in reading
class. The students are scripting an excerpt from their novels and performing
in December. We will film their performances to view before the holidays. In
math, the students have done a fantastic job with the multiplication unit and
will continue to practice throughout the school year. We are now embarking on
the division unit. It has been a great math year so far! At the present time,
Mrs. Craven’s writing workshop is focusing on the process of creating a five
paragraph essay. The lessons have been staggered and each class has had
instruction in writing focus statements, support details, introductory
paragraphs and concluding statements. In science, we are currently learning
about plant and animal cells and the functions of each. Students are
writing comparison paragraphs using their own data obtained from models and
experiments. Following our cell unit, we will study Floating and Sinking, a
unit that focuses on buoyancy and density. In social studies, we have begun a
study of the British colonies to prepare for a unit on the American
Revolution.
