This is my tenth year teaching Biology at Bishop England and my
nineteenth year teaching overall. However, I am a second career teacher
having begun my livelihood in a very different field. I received a B.S. in
Zoology from Miami University but unfortunately graduated at the start of a
recession in 1980. Jobs were hard to come by so I embarked on what would
become a successful retail career. I spent eight years as a Merchandise
Analyst and a Divisional Manager. Finally coming to my senses and answering
my true calling, I went back to school and earned my certification and a
M.A.T. degree in Teaching from Manhattanville College in New York.
I am originally from Ohio, but my husband’s job has taken us to Texas,
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Kentucky, Kansas, and Illinois! I have been in
Charleston for over twelve years now ... the longest I've lived anywhere
other than my hometown. Most of my experience is in teaching Biology, but
I've also taught Physical Science, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and
even Criminology! Since coming to Charleston I have had the opportunity to
teach teachers at the South Carolina Aquarium and develop high school
curricula for my alma mater, Miami University.
I love to travel … especially to places that offer spectacular wildlife
photography. Some of my favorite destinations are Kenya, Alaska, Costa Rica,
and the Galapagos Islands. Stop by my room and check out my most recent
photographic attempts.
In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am also the moderator of the
Student Government Association.
I hope that every student comes away from my class with a sense of
accomplishment and a greater respect for the scientific nature of the world
in which we live. We all need to live responsibly and have a minimal impact
on the planet.
