I joined the English Department faculty at Bishop England in 1979 and have
since taught courses to students at all grades and levels. My connection to
our school has been deepened by having all three of my children--Will,
Emily,and Leah--graduate from BE.
Reading is one of the great pleasures of my life. My tastes range from
mysteries to beach reads to critically acclaimed literature. I love novels,
memoirs, poetry, essays, and magazines. My favorite novel is All the King's
Men by Robert Penn Warren. I recently read Four Spirits, The Glass Castle,
and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.
I also write. I would say it is pleasurable but it is actually exhausting
work. I write short stories, memoirs, and funny pieces. When I have to take a
course for recertification, I take writing courses, primarily through the
Lowcountry Writing Project. Besides honing my skills, I learn how it feels to
get feedback from a teacher...it can sting. But luckily the teachers I have
had have helped me tremendously.
My husband and I live on James Island on a dirt road. The long drive from our
home to Daniel Island is worth it...I get to teach at Bishop England, a
school I love primarily because of its wonderful students. The long drive
from Daniel Island to our home in the woods is worth it...there I re-energize
for the next day of school.
