Wide Reading and Motivation

Students work at learning to read independently, or with a partner, for at least 15 minutes everyday in the classroom without fatigue. They should establish a home reading habit of reading for at least 15 minutes each night.

Phonemic Awareness

Students should be able to orally merge spoken segments into a word (c/a/t). Orally produce groups of words that start with the same initial sound. Orally produce rhyming words in response to spoken words. Use a finger to point to each word while reading.Look at pictures for clues. Point to the first letter of each word. Read actively. Read comfortably and with confidence.

Vocabulary and Background Knowledge

Has enough background knowledge to name and talk about the pictures. Knows a large number of environmental words by sight.

Comprehension of Information

Demonstrates an understanding of the material(laugh at the funny parts). Makes predictions based on title, cover, illustrations, and text. Is able to talk/think about the content of the book.

The goals listed above are for the Y/YY reader. This is where most students begin. Our goal is to have students be able to complete all of the above items and move forward to becoming a G reader.
