AMERICAN SPORT: THE INTERVIEW

OBJECTIVES:
Students will interview an athlete or coach to discover the influence and 
impact of sports
on an individual’s life. For this assignment, students will compile a list of 
questions about
the role of athletic participation in America, interview an individual 
involved in sports and
analyze responses. This assignment may be used to illustrate concepts of 
sport and sport
participation discussed in Chapter 15 (Sport).
Students may videotape or tape record interviews (an analysis should be 
included) and
turn these in with a written summary


GRADING 
Assess grade for this assignment on the basis organization, validity of 
questions, and
analysis.

What influence does participation in a sport have on the life and choices of 
an athlete? The
purpose of this assignment is to discover the impact of sports on a single, 
serious athlete. Your
subject may be a coach or a member of an athletic team. Follow the directions 
below, but use
your sociological imagination in compiling questions and analyzing the 
answers.

influence of sports
in subject’s life. You may want to consider the following topics: time 
subject spends in sports
related activities, positive and negative aspects of sports participation, 
attitudes about winning
and losing, etc., Questions should be clearly understood by your subject. Use 
a tape recorder or
video camera to ensure accuracy of answers. Transcribe answers into a written 
form.

Write an analysis of the influence of sports on the life of your subject. Has
