What do I need to know about my textbook?
TEXTBOOK
Book: Growth of a Nation(Scott Foresman) Cost: 38.00
This is our fourth year with these textbooks and they are a
wonderful resource
for the students. Over the course of the year, students create a
notebook
that is a customized text that specifically addresses the South
Carolina social studies standards. The notebook we create in
class is the
student¡¦s best resource.
Beaufort County School District has implemented a new way to
issue
textbooks. Students check out a textbook the same way they check
out library
books. Every textbook has a unique bar code. If the book becomes
unidentifiable, the student will have to purchase the book.
I strongly encourage students to put a book cover on their books
(not the
adhesive, sticky kind as this may damage the bar code).
Student books can be taken home for homework/review as needed,
but should be
stored in the students locker. Team teachers will work together
to make sure
that students will not need to carry home more than 2 textbooks a
night.
How will I be graded?
GRADING: WEIGHTS AND CATEGORIES
Homework 10%
Quizzes and History Labs 30%
Interactive Notebook and In-Class assignments 30%
Final Assessments: Tests, Projects, Writing 30%
HOMEWORK (10%)
You will have homework most nights, Monday through Thursday. The
purpose of
homework is to practice, preview, or review content and skills
that are
taught in class. You should plan on spending about 10 - 15
minutes each
night on your Social Studies homework.
QUIZZES and HISTORY LABS (30%)
Quizzes can
take many forms, including short writing assignments. The lowest
quiz each
quarter will be dropped.
It is important that you learn to ¡¡±do¡¨ history, both to
develop
understanding of how people in the past lived and to develop the
skills of a
historian in interpreting and analyzing the past. Activities that
will help
you do that I call ¡¡±History Labs¡¨. These count as quizzes.
INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK and IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS (30%)
Most student work will be done in the interactive notebook and it
is your
child¡¦s best resource in mastering the South Carolina Social
Studies
standards. This category also includes practice/preview in-class
assignments
that are not included in the IAN. These assignments are stored in
the
homework/in-class envelope in the back of your notebook.
FINAL ASSESSMENTS: Tests, Projects, and Writing (30%)
Tests will be held when the standards for a unit of study have
been met. You
will be given a study guide and we will review in class. Expect 2-
3 unit
tests per quarter. Students will also complete a project for each
unit.
Unit projects will be completed in class. Longer pieces of
writing will also
go in this category.
What do I do if I am absent?
1.Check the Notebook Table of Contents to see what you have
missed.
2.Assignments are listed and extra copies of all handouts can be
found
on the assignment board at the assignment calendar on
www.engrade.com/mrsgannon
3. Check with Mrs. Gannon if you have any questions.
4. Complete the missed assignments/notes. You have two days for
every
day you are absent.
5. Bring the assignment to Mrs. Gannon so that she can correct it
and
give you credit. You must put the assignment in your teacher's
hand to
receive credit.
What about late or incomplete work?
All late assignments will lose 10 points per day they are late.
Late homework will not be accepted after the week in which it was
assigned.
Missing or Incomplete notebook work may be completed for credit
by the next
time the notebooks are graded, with a signed note from your
parent. Ten
points will be deducted from the assignment score for lateness.
Bring the assignment to Mrs. Gannon so that she can correct it
and give you
credit. You must put the assignment in her hand to receive credit.
What about extra credit?
Extra credit is exactly that, extra and will not take the place
of your
regular assignments.
•Study Notes from Parents - for communicating with you that there
is a test,
and for studying for the test with an adult, I offer ten points
extra credit
on the test. Students must bring a note to turn in on the day of
the test.
•The teacher may occasionally offer additional extra credit
How and when will my notebook be graded?
Notebooks will usually be collected for grades on Thursday. Note -
I may at
anytime collect your notebook for grading, as I expect you to
finish
assignments when you are given them. Stay up to date!
What kind of things will we do in class?
Note-taking and lecture
Interactive notebook assignments
Role-playing
Read-alouds
Simulations
Art projects
In short, anything I can think of to help you learn!
What are the rules?
