My name is Flo Killen but most people call me “Miss Flo.” I have two
beautiful grown children, Rivers and Kari. I live on Waverly Creek at
Pawley’s Island with my fourteen year old shitzu Kahlua, my chihuahua
Tia Maria and Franklin, and my yellow cat Ping.
I have always been a South Carolinian. I grew up in Litchfield Beach where my
father was one of the first developers.
After graduating from Winyah High School in Georgetown, I attended Brenau
College in Gainesville Georgia. I later transfered and graduated from the
University of S.C. with a B.S. in Elementary Education. I also received a
Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from U.S.C.
In 2008, I was selected as a Master Teacher by SCISA, which has been one of
my greatest professional accomplishments!
Throughout my career I have taught in public and private schools. My teaching
positions have been in inner city schools, suburbs, military bases, and even
a little country school house. I have taught K-4 through Fifth grades and
been a Title One Math and Reading Resource Teacher. The past 12 years I have
been teaching the K-4 class at Lowcountry Preparatory School. Teaching at
Lowcountry has been the most rewarding teaching experience I have had. The
biggest benefit to working in a small private school is having the freedom to
work closely with other creative teachers to develop and implement a
curriculum specifically for our school.
I teach school because I love it! Teaching is not only my profession but a
lifelong passion. I adore my students and treat them as I would want someone
to treat my own children. Every child has a special gift to give to the
classroom. I love the children for who they are and I show them every day. I
strive to make each child feel loved, secure and happy. I hope to instill
in them the importance of life lessons: showing respect for others, being
responsible for their actions, and having beautiful manners. I believe these
attributes will take them far in life.
