7th Grade ELA Syllabus

 

Course Description:

 

Students will continue developing their English and Language Art skills through a four-pronged approach: reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. The focus of this class is the improvement of basic reading and writing skills towards effective communication beyond the classroom.

.

Course Objectives:

 

Students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature.

Students will write using a variety of styles for multiple purposes and audiences.

Students will increase their day-to-day vocabulary.

Students will write using the conventions of Standard American English.

 

Standards:

Materials:

 

Students should have a three ring binder divided into four sections labeled: Journals, Vocabulary, Reading, and Writing.

Students will need paper and a writing utensil EVERY day.

We will be using the Holt textbook, Elements of Literature.

Resources outside of the classroom (newspapers, magazine articles, etc) will also be used when appropriate to the lesson.

GATE classes will also be using: Word Within the Word, Magic Lens 2, Junior Great Books, and the William and Mary Unit: 1940s, a Decade of Change.

Course of Study:

 

All classes will learn Greek and Latin stems. All classes will read fiction and non-fiction literature.
