Why I Teach

Teaching is actually my third career, although I have always worked in
the field of education. I received my Masters in Early Childhood Education
from the University of South Carolina and have been teaching kindergarten at
Woodruff Primary for fourteen years. It is by far the most challenging
career I have had, but it is also the most rewarding. And I can certainly
say that I am never bored!

In kindergarten we teach all of the four basic subjects - language arts
(reading and writing), math, science, and social studies. While I enjoy
teaching each of these, my favorite is reading. It is such a wonderful
feeling to know that I have helped a child take the first steps in learning
to read. There is nothing like the look on the face of a child who has just
discovered that he/she can read!

My Most Important Goal

I have many goals for my class, but the most important one involves the
learning environment. I strive to create a safe, respectful, and
material-rich environment so that all students may learn and also develop
self-control, self-esteem, and self-reliance.

I love to work with children as they solve social problems, such as
cutting in line, name calling, taking turns, etc. At WPS we use "Conscious
Discipline," a program developed by Dr. Becky Bailey. Through this program
I help children learn to solve their problems with words and respect. It is
so rewarding to watch angry/upset faces turn into smiling faces as students
share a handshake, a high five, or a pinky hug at the end of a problem
solving moment.
