Sophomore Research Paper

Elizabethan England

In this major assignment you will individually practice the skill of writing a research paper and presenting an overview of your topic in a 3-minute speech to the class. You will research a topic from the Elizabethan Era at home and at school. Once you have completed your research and formulated an opinion, you will write an essay (maximum of 3 pages) explaining what you feel was the significance of your topic. You will also organize your ideas and practice your public speaking skills by preparing a class presentation on your research. Remember, learning to research, write, and present well is hard work! To do this assignment, you will need to complete the following steps:

Part I Research: Research your topic. A minimum of 4 sources and 20 note cards are required.

Part II Write Your Paper

  1. Organize your notes and identify the critical pieces that made your topic significant.
  2. Focus on three main areas and find at least two details related to those main areas that you can use in your paper.
  3. Write a thesis statement that clearly states the significance of your topic. After you have developed a thesis, build an introductory paragraph that will set the tone of your essay.
  4. Organize your essay using the outline to give each main area its own body paragraph – a total of three body paragraphs.
  5. Wrap up your research paper with a strong conclusion paragraph that connects your topic with our lives today.
  6. Complete a final draft of your research paper with in-text citations and a Works Cited with at least four sources attached

Part III Prepare a 3-Minute Presentation

  1. Organize your notes and identify the critical pieces that must be in your presentation. These should be the same critical pieces that appear in your paper.
  2. Brainstorm a creative way to present your information. Examples: PowerPoint, Skit, etc. It is important to also consider necessary props.
  3. Create visuals. Visuals must be clear enough to see from the back of the classroom.
  4. Practice your presentation. (Time yourself!)
  5. Deliver your 3-minute presentation.
