Battle Academy Garden Club
Welcome to the Garden Club Homepage! For the 2011-2012 School year the 30 third graders along with Mrs. Kean and Mrs. Chapin are working on our gardening skills, science content knowledge, and how to pick and try new healthy snacks. Some new is always happening in the garden, whether it is the dead of winter or the middle of the summer.
Our Story
The Garden Club started in the Spring of 2009. Third Graders meet weekly after school to learn about gardening, healthy eating, and caring for our school garden on the Battle Academy rooftop. The first spring, the Garden Club had over 30 members. We have had over 30 kids sign up every year to be a part of the now bi-weekly club. Kids are discovering their love for the outdoors, working with their hands, and making a difference in the way their school looks.

A $250 grant from Annie's Grants for Gardens by Annie's Homegrown Foods (http://www.annies.com) allowed us to continue to grow our garden.
The Junior League of Chattanooga and the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department funded a $1000 grant for garden supplies, plants, and program materials for the 2010 school year.
A special thanks goes to our long time partner and supporter TVA for helping us with the purchase of tools, seating, and lumber and dirt to double the amount of raised beds for flowers and vegetables.
A new partnership started with HCDE Coordinated School Nutrition in 2010 and our work continued in helping students make healthy eating choices and learn about new foods.
Special Project Spring 2011
Isaac Duncan, a local Sculptor, worked with our club to create a piece of art for the rooftop. We worked through sessions on sculpture, how to plan for a piece, and creating models. The piece was installed April 2011.

Thanks,
