Academic Common Market: A program whereby students can attend Out-Of-State Colleges for In-State Tuition. Sixteen states in southern region participate in the academic common market to allow students to attend neighboring states for in-state tuition if a major course of study in not offered. Check out www.sreb.org/acm.asp for details of which majors and which institutions participate and the application procedures to receive the reduced rates. Brochures are available in the College and Career Center - College Materials drawers

COLLEGE VISITS

Periodically college and career recruiters visit the College and Career Center adjacent to the Guidance Office to visit with students and/or parents. Visits will be from 8:00-8:30 at the College and Career Center or 11:45-1:30 in the West Mall in front of the Cafeteria. Please take advantage of these times to visit personally with recruiters to ask specific questions and obtain valuable information.

Area Forums:  Colleges and Universities will sometimes visit areas with area forums to incorporate several schools in a given region.  We are aware of the following forums at this time.

OPEN HOUSES

Colleges and Universities often have Open Houses in the fall term to allow students and parents an on-campus opportunity to meet with staff, visit facilities and talk with students. Remember to use a campus visit day, notes for visits must be submitted to Dr. Bartlett in the West Mall Office prior to the visit. Further information and form downloads at http://beardenhs.knoxschools.org.

SPECIAL COLLEGE EVENTS AND NEWS

Colleges periodically make us aware of special events that occur on their campus that might be important to admissions and scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Nominations: Bearden is often asked to nominate students for selected scholarships and awards. Sometimes we can nominate several, sometimes only one. Many of these nominations will have specific criteria - certain GPA, PSAT, SAT or ACT scores or Athletic honors. We usually solicit interested students, so that we can match students of interest with institutions of interest. For example, Emory Scholars candidates would be students planning on attending Emory University. Students wishing to be considered for specific nominations MUST see Mrs. Slabbekorn to be put in the pool of potential students to nominate. IF they are selected, their counselor will notify them and provide information on the next step.

Liberty University - One alumni scholarship offering for a student applying to, accepted and planning to attend Liberty University. See Mrs. Slabbekorn in guidance if you are interested. First come - First serve.

Scholarships: The majority of scholarship monies will come from the colleges the student applies. The information posted here will be private or independent scholarship information of which we are made aware. If a website is provided, you are encouraged to seek the information directly from that website. Otherwise, information and applications may be located in the Scholarship File Cabinet in the College and Career Center. WATCH DEADLINES!
