Week 3-12-2012 (due Monday, 3-19-2012)

2 pts. March is Irish American History Month. How is it celebrated?
4 pts. Choose 1 famous Irish American. Write a paragraph explaining that
person's contribution to American society.
2 pts. March is Women's History Month. Explain the origin.
4 pts. Choose 1 famous femal American. Write a paragraph explaining that
person's contribution to American society.
Week 3-19-2012 (due Friday, 3-23-2012)
5pts. Write a full page letter to Thomas Jefferson as if you were Meriwether
Lewis or William Clark. Explain why you want to explore the Louisiana
Territory. Why are you the best person for the job? What do you hope to
find on your expedition?
3 pts. March is National Poetry Month. Bring in a copy of your favorite
poem. Write a brief explanation of why it is your favorite.
5 pts. There were 5 states admitted to the United States during the month of
March. Write down the names of those 5 states and the date they joined the
U.S.
3 pts. What planet was discovered during the month of March? When? By whom?
Week 3-26-2012 (due Friday, 3-30-2012)
2 pts. March 20th was the first day of spring this year. It is also called
the vernal equinox? What does that mean?
2 pts. Daylight Savings time began on Sunday, March 11th. What is the origin
of Day Light's Savings time?
Week 4-9-2012 (due Friday, 4-13-2012)
1pt. April is the fourth month of the year. What is the birthstone for
April?
5 pts. April is Keep America Beautiful Month. Make a poster to celebrate
the month. It should be in full color and demonstrate at least 2 ways we can
keep America beautiful.
5 pts. April is Mathematics Education Month. Write a mathematical formula
or property (example - pythagorean theorem or distributive property). Then
work a math problem to the end using/explaining the formula or property.
2 pts. The first week of April is national humor week. Write your favorite
(school appropriate) joke and the answer.
2 pts. Friday, April 6th was Good Friday. What is the origin of Good
Friday? How is it celebrated?
2 pts. Sunday, April 8th was Easter. What is the origin of the Easter
Holiday? How is it celebrated?
Week 4-16-2012 (due Friday, 4-20-2012)
2 pts. The second week of April is National Library Week. Bring in your
public library card and show it to Mrs. Heintz to receive your bonus points.
If you don't have one, now is the time to go get one.
5 pts. The third week of April is National Volunteer Week. You must spend
30 minutes of time volunteering (work without pay)in our community. Then,
write a description of the service your performed. Your parent or the person
you volunteered for must sign the statement in order for you to receive
credit. (examples - picking up litter, cutting someone's grass, volunteer at
a soup kitchen, etc.)
2 pts. April 6th is the anniversary of the North Pole being discovered.
What year was it discovered? Who discovered it?
3 pts. The first McDonald's opened on April 14th. What year? Where was it
located? Who was the owner?
Week 4-23-2012 (due Friday, 4-27-2012)
10 pts. April 22nd is Earth Day. It was observed for the first time in 1970
with the message "give earth a chance". Create a poster in honor of earth
day (must be in full color, include the date, earth day, and the message for
earth day). Then, write a paragraph explaining why you think this is an
important day to celebrate.
Special Bonus (Due by Thursday 4-26-2012)
5 pts. April 27th is Secretary's Day. Design a full color card for our
school secretary - Mrs. Bernice Dean. Tell her why you appreciate her and
thank her for a job well done. (Make it personal. Here are examples of
things a student might put in the card - answering your questions, taking
care of you when you are sick in the office, finding your mom's phone # when
you can't remember it, etc.)Turn it in to me, so you can receive credit. I
will give them to her the next day.
There will be no additional bonus assignments posted this year. Students may
turn in any of the above listed assignments until Wednesday, May 9th.
