
This year we will be emphasizing and assessing academic vocabulary in 3rd
grade. Students will be exposed to the words in class and
expected to study them each night at home. Assessments will not be basic
recall of word meanings. Instead students will be expected to know the word
meaning and answer application questions.
Academic Vocabulary
1. product- the answer in a multiplication problem
2. factors- the numbers that are being multiplied in a multiplication
problem.
3. decimal- the point that shows an amount less than one dollar in money
4. singular nouns- any one person, place, thing, or idea
5. plural nouns- more than one person, place, thing, or idea
6. common nouns- any person, place, thing, or idea (ex: girl, boy, book)
7. proper nouns- a specific person, place, thing, or idea (ex: Sue, Tom,
The Three Little Pigs)
8. map key (legend)- colors/symbols which stand for something else
9. hemisphere- four particular areas: northern, southern, eastern, western
10. barter- trading one item for another (ex: Native Americans would trade
with the French traders)
11. water cycle - the process of the earth distributing water involving
evaporation, condensation, and precipation.
