Announcements

Thursday, May 7

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! for all the wonderful treats, gifts, flowers, and notes these last 2 weeks. I have been overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness and generosity! CDS is the BEST!

All students have received their study guides for final exams. We will go over those on Monday, May 11. As instructed on the study guide, students (with input from parents, I hope) are to decide how to use the study guide. It will not be graded. Students may write out the definitions and answers to questions, or not, as they decide what will be the most beneficial to them as they study for finals. Students should also review the tests that have been taken this semester. Final exam questions will come from those tests, as well as from the exam study guide.

The exam schedule for science is:
Tuesday, 10:30-12:00  7A-B1
Wednesday, 8:30-10:00 7A-B2
Thursday, 8:30-10:00  6th grade
Thursday, 10:30-12:00 8th grade

This week, 6th graders are dissecting owl pellets, 7th graders are dissecting frogs, and 8th graders are exploring Newton's Laws of Motion. They will receive grades for their class participation and classwork. There will not be a test over this material. (We are out of time!)

Quite a number of students attended the Rock and Mineral Show for Science extra credit. I was very pleased with the reports and "show and tell" items they brought to class. It was obvious that the students enjoyed the show and learned something too!  Several students and parents have asked if, because they had a conflict that prevented them from attending the Rock Show, there could be an alternative assignment for extra credit.  So here it is!

   Students may visit any of the following museums or locations of scientific interest. To receive the 100/A extra credit, the student must bring to class proof of having attended the museum or exhibit between May 7 and May 18, and a one page report describing an exhibit or activity they participated in at the location attended. Proof and report MUST be turned in no later than Monday, May 18.
   * Pink Palace Museum (Between now and May 31, you can go to the website www.memphismuseums.org and sign up for a FREE 3-month membership - a terrific bargain. Check out what you get for free!)
   * Imax Theater (now showing Grand Canyon Adventure-River at Risk. I hear it is AWESOME)
   * Sharpe Planetarium
   * Memphis Zoo
   * Mississippi River Museum
   * Civil Rights Museum
   * Chucalissa Archaeological Center
   * Lichterman Nature Center
   * National Ornamental Metal Museum
   * Memphis Fire Museum
   * Cotton Museum

One more item that may interest you: Fiddler On the Roof is now playing at the Orpheum. Did you know that your student can go to the Sunday evening performance at 7pm for just $20 a ticket? The occasion is called "Student Rush". 15 minutes before the performance begins, all seats not sold or claimed will go on sale, starting with the best seats in the house, for $20 cash (only cash is accepted). Each students (and each teacher or educator with proof of job) can purchase 2 tickets for $20 each (that way, the parent who drives the student to the theater can see the play too!)  This is the way my husband and I get to see many productions at the Orpheum for an affordable cost, and we always get great seats!  A line begins forming, at the "student rush" sign placed outside the door, about an hour before the sale begins, so don't wait until the last minute to arrive. Remember, the tickets are sold beginning with the best seats in the house and working back and up through the theater.  Maybe I will see you there!

Last Friday, April 17, the 6th graders took a field trip to Reelfoot Lake. We were blessed with the best weather possible, which allowed us to have a long, relaxing pontoon boat ride around the lake. While on the boat, we saw an amazing assortment of birds - Bald Eagles, Egrets, Blue Herrons, Coots, and even a Pelican, to name a few! The students did an excellent job conducting a photosynthesis experiment in the brand new science lab at the UT Research center. Students got a "close-up and personal" view of the snakes of the region - some even held the beautiful milk snake! They also examined the pelts, skins, and skulls of animals found in the area. We ended a most excellent day with a delicious meal at the Lakeview Dining Room.

We praise God and thank Him for a safe journey, perfect weather, well-behaved students, and a terrific learning experience. Thank you, Central Day School Administration for giving us the privilege of taking the trip. And, thank you, parents for your support - those who accompanied and assisted us, and those who stayed behind and prayed!

As you know, this is achievement test week. Please be sure students are well rested and get up in time to eat a good breakfast and get to school without being rushed and stressed. There will be no homework this week. Students should be sure and bring a snack to enjoy mid-morning.

Last week's Science Fair was OUTSTANDING! Thanks for all your hard work, students. Parents, thank you for your support and encouragement. I hope you were able to visit the Science Fair sometime Tuesday, to see what our students accomplished.

I am very grateful to the panel of judges who worked very hard to choose the winners. A list of the winners will be published in the Tuesday Informer.

One word of advice that I have shared with my middle school students this year, I also heard over and over from the judges, and that is "How can you apply your project and its results?" Scientists, science educators, and science fair judges are looking for projects that are meaningful and relevant to the student; that can have application that will have a positive effect or influence on the student, community, or world. Application has been the recurring "theme" at the awards ceremony for the Shelby County Science Fair the last number of years. I am hoping that our CDS Fair can be held earlier in the year during the 2009-10, so that our winners can be entered in the county wide fair, and I will be emphasizing "Application" as an essential component of the project. My advice for students is to BEGIN TODAY to be aware of things that puzzle you, "bug" you, intrigue you, or challenge you, as we finish the school year and enjoy summer vacation. Those are the things of which good science projects are made! Perhaps you can think of an experiment to see how you can solve that puzzle, make that thing that bugs you work for you, discover things about that which intrigues you, or conquer that which challenges you. Write down the possibilities and your ideas. You will be well on your way to a winning project and rewarding, satisfying, scientific investigation!

We began presentations of the projects in science class last week and will continue that this week. We will also devote several days to reviewing practice tests for the achievement tests to be taken next week.

The only homework assignment this week is to prepare the April current event which is due Friday, April 17th for the 7th and 8th grade. There will be a bin in each homeroom for the current event folders since I will be on a field trip Friday. 6th graders must turn their current event in Thursday, April 16, because we will be on our Reelfoot field trip Friday, and I don't want to carry it over until Monday, the first day of testing. This will be the last current event for the year for all grades (I cancelled the May current event that was orginally assigned to 6th and 7th grade).

IMPORTANT CHANGE IN SCHEDULE FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 7: The musical performance has been rescheduled for 2:30, instead of that evening!! Afterward, you are invited to visit the Art and Science Showcase.

March 30, 2009 This is busy week as we observe Spirit Week and the First Annual Thunder Run, and everyone puts the finishing touches on their science projects. Tests will be given in all grade levels in the next few days so check the individual grade levels for days.

March 8, 2009

Important schedule changes:
We will not be having any chick.fil.a delivered this Wednesday, March 11, due to family chapel.

Due to several of our students (1-4) participating in the spelling bee in Jackson, TN our spring pictures have been moved from Friday, March 13 (this Friday) to Thursday, April 9 (day before Good Friday). This Friday will NOT be an out of uniform day.

7th Graders: Don't forget to turn in your fees and paperwork for the May 1, NASA field trip. The deadline to pay is Thursday, April 9.

Please check the grade level news for specific science plans for your child. In addition, EVERY middle school student received a Science Fair Packet Wednesday, Feb. 4. I hope you have looked over the packet with them. The second page explains the 5 grades you child will receive for the various components of the project, and gives the due date for each component. Their second grade was given for the page due Tuesday, March 3, on which they were to have stated their question, hypothesis, scripture, materials list, and included a copy of their bibliography (works cited). The remaining grades are for the final paper, project, and oral presentation. The due date for the project and paper is April 7 (bonus points for papers turned in April 3). Please contact me if you have any questions about the science fair project that are not answered (or not clear!) in the packet.

The following information has not changed from the beginning of the year, but is retained here FYI:

Tuesday, Sept. 30, students received materials and instructions about a new science assignment - Science Current Events. Current events will be due once a month and will count as a major test grade. This will be an EASY test grade if all instructions are followed! Use the sample rubric (grading sheet) as your "receipe" for a successful current event worth 100/A.

  • I will normally send a brief e-mail each day to describe, in general, what was done in class that day and what, if any, homework was assigned. (I am still getting some "undeliverable" messages, so if you are not receiving the daily e-mail, please check with the CDS office to be sure the school has your correct address) As often as possible, I send this e-mail immediately after school.
  • I normally am not able to read or response to e-mails during school hours. E-mail is checked ASAP after school.
  • Graded papers will usually be returned as they are graded, rather than holding them until Tuesday Informer envelopes go out. Your child must be responsible for bringing all papers (good AND not-so-good) home to you.
  • Each student must have a spiral (one-subject size is best) in which ONLY science vocabulary is recorded. When their spiral has been approved, I will place a printed label on the top, right corner of the cover.
  • Each student must have a folder with BOTH prongs and pockets in which they will CLIP lab experiment information and lab reports/sheets which have been graded. Items clipped in this folder should remain there for the rest of the year. Their folder will have a printed label attached to the top, right corner of the folder front.
  • Beginning the week of Sept. 22, I will post (with God's help!) a lesson plan with tentative assignments for the week on TeacherWeb. Please note that all plans and assignments are subject to change at any time. (I will continue to send the daily email through teacher ease which, because it is updated daily, will override any assignments or plans on the Web page
