If I am sick, how do I make up my work?
Shelby County policy applies in this situation. (You can find a copy of that
policy in the school office or in the SCS handbook.) Basically it states that
you have as many days to make up your work as you were out sick. CMS's policy
states that parents should not call the school for homework.
Check the teacher's web site for lessons, homework, and other information if a
student is absent. Use the "I Was Absent" book in Mrs. Chiulli's classroom.
How do I receive my make up work?
It is YOUR responsibility to check the "I Was Absent" notebook, to
check the web site, and/or ask the teacher for your make up work. If you do
not ask for your make up work , or if you do not turn in missing assignments,
your grade will result in a zero.
In fact, when you are absent, an "ab" is marked in the roll book or grade book.
An "ab" enters on Powerschool as a zero. When you make up the
work, the "ab" or the zero will change to the grade you make on the work.
Do I have to read Accelerated Reader?
7th Grade AR Requirements
Because of the new grading policies set by SCS this year, AR will no longer be
required for each 7th grader.
We will not use AR as a summative assessment for the following reasons:
* The reading and testing is not completed in the classroom so it can not
be a true reflection of an individual's own work.
* There is no practice or formative assessment before the actual AR test
is taken.
There will not be AR tests available for points towards prizes or awards at
the end of the school year.
Is extra credit available?
Extra credit is given on the web site each night. It is not hard to do. It
increases communication between the teacher, the student, and the parent
because the parent is required to sign the extra credit. The extra credit
tends to be a review of that day's lesson, so it serves as a good review.
Also, the extra credit activity sometimes involves events that are happening
at school, lessons from class, announcements about upcoming deadlines, etc.
Students should not wait until the end of the grading period to decide that
they need extra credit!

How can I check my child's grades?
Each student is required to keep a grade sheet for my reading & science class
in his/her notebook. The grade sheet should be kept current.
It should match the master grade sheet that is posted in the classroom.
Grades will also be posted on line through PowerSchool. Parents and students
each have a code to use to access the PowerSchool site. Codes may be obtained
from the CMS office.
How do I figure up my average for science or reading class?
SCS policy states that 12 grades must be given each quarter.
No more than 14 grades may be given.
SCS policy also says that tests and quizzes will count as 90%
of the grade and that homework and classwork
may only count as 10% of the grade.
Each department at CMS decides how grades for each subject area will be
determined.
Both the Language Arts & Science departments decided that
homework and classwork will count as 10% of the grade each quarter.
Quizzes will count as 40% of the grade while
tests will count as 50% of the grade.
In MY classes, if a student or a parent catches an error that I have made in
entering the grades, the student will earn extra credit points!
