I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing and a Master of
Arts in Teaching degree (MAT), both from the University of Memphis, as
well as thirty hours of graduate course work beyond the Master's level. I am
also designated as a Highly Qualified teacher by the state of Tennessee.
I live in Cordova with Sandy, my wife of twenty-nine years; my son, Kyle,
22, who just graduated from Union University magna cum laude; and my
daughter, Grace, 15, a sophomore at White Station High.
Some interesting things about me are:
--I am a published poet and playwright. I currently have several short
stories and poems in submission.
--I published a children's book called "The King of Stories" in October, 2010.
--My interests are reading, writing, movies, softball, racquetball,
philosophy and theology.
--When I have free time away from school I am usually reading a book,
writing, or doing something with my family. Every month or so I read original
poetry at local venues with some poets.
--I am also the eccentric frontman for a small band called The Dilettantes
with my daughter
--I love Mexican and Italian food, almost any kind of pizza. In fact I eat at
Russo's New York Pizza in Germantown every Monday night.
--I have a great fondness for dark chocolate.
--I have traveled extensively, namely to London,England; Puerto Vallarta and
Cancun, Mexico; and Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, and Manaus, Brazil, as well
as almost every state in the Union.
--I am a TeachPlus Memphis Teaching Policy Fellowship Fellow.
--I am a Stand For Children Team Captain here at Cordova Middle.
--I am a TEI Ambassador for CMS.
--I am a skilled metalworker. (Not really.)
My classroom will be a curriculum based, data driven, values infused,
challenging and engaging environment where students will learn to think
creatively, analytically, adn independently. I will use a variety of methods
and activities to encourage the exploration of literature, speaking and
writing in a way that will prepare students for the world they will encounter
outside the walls of Cordova Middle. One of the key features in my classroom
is the expectation that my students work independently.
My mission is to challenge and engage all learners to help them get from
where they are to the next level of learning or higher, as well as prepare
them for successful performance on state achievement assessments. I can only
do this with the cooperation of student and parent, however, and I look
forward to working with parents in creative ways to help children be
successful.
