2010-2011 Mr. Long's Chemistry Labs # 2

Sand & Salt Lab - Using the triple beam balance.

Students are taught how to weigh objects and samples using the triple beam balance. This part of the lab is tough for the teacher because all students want to know exactly how to measure. Accuracy is a must!

In the sand and salt experiment, the filter paper that collects the sand from the funnel is put in an oven to dry out the water.

Then the filter paper and sand can be weighed to ascertain the amount of sand that is re-captured.

Using the triple beam balance to measure the evaporating dish.

Deciding on the correct procedure.

One of my honors classes working on the sand and salt lab.

Same class.

Bending the bobby pin to see how many bends it takes before is breaks.

Straightening the bobby pin with the busen burner.

Close-up of the hook.

This student was satisfied with his product.

Students love to help their hydrogen filled balloons to undergo combustion.

The reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid is quite vigorous.

Lighting the balloon.

6th period honors.

All students love this lab.

Happy students.

Dr. Dunathan creates reactions to be observed by my students.

The fire-fly reaction - creating chemiluminescence.

Dr. Dunathan does a great show and tell in my chemistry class.

The doc pipettes copperchloride into a beaker with an aluminum wire for an oxidation-reduction reaction.
