Being a mother, I know that it is extremely difficult leaving your child in
the hands of a perfect stranger. The first day of Kindergarten can be more
difficult for the parents than it is for the children. If you are like me,
the more you know, the better you feel. So, here is a little bit about me.
I am wife to a wonderful husband, and mother to two daughters, ages 23 and 25.
My husband and I live in Lebanon with our two Sheltie dogs, Abigail and Spot,
and a cat, Murphy Brown. I attend church, where I attend Bible studies, sing
in the choir, and enjoy committee work.
I went back to school when our daughters were 3 and 5 years old and received
my Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, from (then)Trevecca Nazarene
College. My major was Early Childhood Education. I recently completed the
Master’s Degree program in Instructional Technology at Trevecca Nazarene
University. This will be my eighteenth year of teaching and my sixteenth as
a Kindergarten teacher.
I try to remember when my children were this age, and how I would want them
treated by their teachers and peers. The classroom should be a haven of
safety, learning, enjoyment, and mutual respect. I want each child to feel
that our classroom is a safe place, a place they want to be, and a place
where they can learn and feel valued as an individual and as a part of our
classroom community.
My goal is to guide the children into learning something new everyday, no
matter where they are in their learning process. Children learn at their
own pace, and in their own ways. My challenge is to find ways to let the
children make discoveries and then give them opportunities to experiment with
what they have learned, encouraging them to work at a level just beyond what
they can do independently. At the core of my philosophy is the ideal of
developmentally appropriate practice: presenting material in ways that
promote the children's optimum learning and development.
