Home work is an important skill learned in First Grade. I do not send home
busy work as homework. The homework that I send home reinforces skills
that we have learned or are learning. It is important to help your child
understand what they are supposed to be doing by reading the instructions or
helping with missed words. But please - let them do their own work.
HOMEWORK HELPERS
Each child learns differently. Most children will need to have a quieter
setting without the television going. They will need encouragement to do it
and not put it off until it is too late in the evening. Have supplies ready
in a certain place so you don't have to go searching for crayons, pencils,
glue sticks, or scissors. You don't have to buy a pencil box to use. Let
them decorate a small box, a baby wipe container, a shoe box, or a coffee
can. Be consistent with your rules for homework and where they are to do
their work.
PARENT TIPS
From time to time I will have homework tips on this page to help you help
your child. Recently, we have studied about parts of a story. You will
need the following information on the Decodable Readers sent home every
Tuesday.
Title - name of the story
Character - a person or animal in the story
Setting - where the story takes place
Plot - what is going on in the story
Main Idea - the one, main thing that the story is about
Author - the person who wrote the story
Illustrator - the person who drew the pictures for the story
