What are phase-in days?

Phase-in days occur at the beginning of your child's kindergarten year. On
this day, only 8 or so students of our class will attend. This is so each
student can become comfortable with our school, classroom, procedures, and
rules. This is also a great opportunity for me, as well as our classroom
assistant Mrs. Marie Howard, to get to know your child. Your child will
only attend one phase-in day. There are three phase-in days total. I will
give you the specific phase-in date your child will be attending. Please
remember that this is a full day. School begins each morning at 8:15 and
dismisses at 3:15.

May I eat lunch with my child at school?

Yes! Please do. If you plan on purchasing a school lunch, please send a
note with your child the morning of the day you plan to eat lunch at our
school. Visitor lunches can be purchased in the cafeteria for $3.75. The
price for adult visitors who will be purchasing a holiday meal is $5.00.
(The meal served the last day before Thanksgiving is considered to be a
Holida Meal.)
Sweetened and unsweetened tea, as well as a salad bar are available for
adults. After signing in at the office, you may meet your child at the
black chairs in front of the office. Our class will pass through on our
way to the lunch room. Please do not bring food from restaurants out of
respect for the other students you will be dining with. If you do not
choose to buy a school lunch, you are welcome to bring a packed lunch from
home.

How can you be contacted?

I do prefer that you contact me through email when possible. I check my
email several times throughout the day, so you should get a prompt
response. If you are not able to email, you are welcome to send a note with
your child, or call me at the school. My email address is
jcarson@clevelandschools.org. Our school phone number is 476-8246. I am
avalible to answer calls during my planning period on Mondays through
Thursdays from 1:15 until 2:15, and on Fridays from 12:15 until 1:15. You
may also reach me by phone after 3:15.

How often are parent conferences?

Our system schedules a parent/teacher conference day each year within the
first few months of school. Parents/guardians are strongly advised to take
advantage of this day. You may sign up for a conference time during our
school's open house. If you cannot attend open house, but would like to
sign up for a conference, please contact me. Other than this day, there are
times I may request a conference with you. I will do my best to work around
your schedule. Also, if you would like to request a conference, please feel
free to do so! I believe that parent/teacher communication is essential to
the success of each student. In some situations, email can also be a useful
tool in discussing any questions, thoughts, or concerns you may have. Never
hesitate to contact me!

After what time is my child considered tardy?

Students may begin entering the building at 7:30 each morning. They may go
to the cafeteria for breakfast, or to the auditorium if they choose not to
eat. At 8:00, a bell will ring to signal the students to go to their
classrooms. The tardy bell rings at 8:15. If your child arrives to the
classroom after the 8:15 bell, he or she is considered tardy. Please note,
if your child is in the building, but does not report to the classroom by
the 8:15 bell, your child will still be counted as tardy.

May I check my child out early?

I do feel strongly that children should be in the classroom for the full
school day. However, I do understand there are occasions where that is not
possible. If you need to check your child out before the 3:15 dismissal
bell, please sign your child out in the office, and wait in the black
chairs. Please do not come down to the classroom so that there will be as
little interruption to our class as possible.

What if my child will be going home differently than usual?

If your child will not be going home the same way as usual, please send a
note to school with your child the morning of the change in transportation.
Be sure to date the note, and list the specific change. If there is a
change after your child has gotten to school and you cannot send a written
note, please call the school office at 476-8246. PLEASE NOTE: I cannot
send your child home differently without a written note or a call to the
office.

How can I locate items my child loses at school?

You can check the Lost and Found area in our cafeteria. Labeling jackets,
sweaters, lunch boxes, hats, etc will be helpful in keeping up with your
child's belongings.

Can I bring in treats to celebrate my child's birthday?

Yes, you may bring in birthday treats. Please notify me several days in
advance so we can arrange a day and time that will work best for both you,
and our class. Also, please let me know what you plan to bring so we can
allow for any students who may have food allergies.

How can I become involved in your classroom?

I appreciate volunteers! There is always a lot to be done. If you are
interested in sharing with students about your job, hobbies, or telling
stories to the children, please let me know! We can always use extra hands
with crafts, reading, tutoring, coloring, class parties, reward days, field
day, Fall Festival, as well as many other things. Please let me know if you
are available. If you are short on time, you could help by donating some
items from the wish list portion of this webiste. You will be able to
indicate interest in class field trips on the permission slips that will be
sent home prior to the trip. Some trips will have a limited number of
avalible adult spaces, so a quick response may be required.

How will my child pay for lunch and breakfast?

Each child will be assigned a lunch room number. This number may be used by
your child to pay for both breakfast and lunch as he or she chooses. You
will receive this number at our parent meeting before the first day of
school, along with a copy of our keypad so your child can practice typing
his or her number at home. Your child will be expected to have this number
memorized by the end of the first several weeks of school.

As your child's lunch account begins to dwindle, the cafeteria staff will
notify you by letter. This will come home in your child's class take home
folder. If your child chooses to bring his or her lunch from home, you do
not have to put money in a lunch account. If your child brings a lunch and
would like to buy milk or icecream, you can send money with your child the
morning of purchase, and that money will be deposited into your child's
account before our lunch time.

To put money in your child's account, you can send cash in a sealed envelope
that is marked with your child's name, my name (Miss Carson), what the money
is for, and the amount of money that is enclosed. You can also make
deposits in your child's lunch room account by sending a check. Checks
should be made payable to Cleveland City Schools Food Service (CCSFS).
Please be sure to also send checks in a sealed envelope marked with your
child's name, my name (Miss Carson), what the money is for, and the amount
of the check that is enclosed.

Payments can also be made by using an online payment service called
Payschools. Please see Cleveland City School's webpage
(www.clevelandschools.org) for a link to use this service. There is also a
Payschools link under the "Breakfast and Lunch Menu" page of our class
website. Money can be put into lunch accounts at any time.

Is icecream available for purchase everyday?

Kindergarten students will be given the opportunity to purchase their choice
of one icecream treat for $.50 on Fridays only. Please be sure your child
has enough money in his or her account for this purchase. Please note that
the free lunch program does not cover the purchase of icecream.

Our classroom has an icecream account in place for those students who may
not be able to afford icecream on Fridays. If you would like to make a
donation to this account, please send money in a sealed envelope marked with
my name (Miss Carson), your child's name, the amount of money enclosed, and
the purpose for the money, "Icecream Account."

Does Stuart offer before school, after school, and holiday day care programs?

An after school program, called Extended School Program (E.S.P.) is
available at Stuart. This program provides care in our school building
beginning immediately after school each day until 6:00 p.m. each evening.
E.S.P. also provides care on most holidays on which schools are closed.
Hours for care on holidays begin at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 6:oo p.m. This
does include summer break. You can drop your child off, and pick your child
up at any time within the hours the program is open.

There is a daily rate for this program; parents only have to pay for the day
that their child attends. The rate for the 2008-2009 school year is $12 a
day. Discounts are available for siblings and families who qualify for the
Free or Reduced Lunch Program. There is a one time $25 registration fee.

Please contact Stuart ESP's site director Andy Overstreet at 504-6374 for
more information.

Can I send medication to school with my child?

No, medications cannot be sent to school with your child. This includes
cough drops, perscription, and non-perscription medications. Medications
must be brought to the school by the parent or guardian of the child in the
original container. If dosage is to change on perscription medications, an
updated label with acurate dosage information must be on the medication
container. In order to administer any medications at school, you must fill
out the appropriate forms. Those forms can be found in the pack given at
the kindergarten parent meeting, they can be obtained from the school
office, or they can be printed off of the system's website. Go to
www.clevelandschools.org. Click on "System Forms" in the bank at the top of
the page. Scroll down until you see "System Wide Forms". From there, you
will see "Medication Forms". Click on the appropriate form. Fill it out
completely, and bring it to school.
