After receiving an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Walters State
Community College, Mr. Nickels became a police officer at the age of 19
before new laws took effect on police officer age requirements. He spent 7
years with the Rogersville Police Department. During that time he graduated
from the TN Law Enforcement Training Academy in Donelson, TN. and attended
numerous in-services and schools for Crime Scene Photography, a DEA drug
school, DUI, and many others. In 1986 he joined the U. S. Navy and spent
three and one half years aboard the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS
Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN 69. Upon completion of his obligated service he
remained in the active naval reserves out of Knoxville being assigned to a
cargo handling battalion. After his active service he joined the Hawkins
County Sheriff's Department where he worked for three years. He then was
hired as Director of the Hawkins County 911 district. He left there and
returned to college and received a bachelors degree in history with a
concentration in secondary education. He minored in Criminal Justice. While
in college he worked as a deputy clerk for the Hawkins County Circuit Court
Clerk. In 1998 he was hired in his present position. He was fortunate to be
the first teacher in the Criminal Justice program here at the center for
technology and has tried to build a first class program. He loves his job
and enjoys teaching students.
Our mission in this class is to teach students the basics of the crimianl
justice system in order to prepare them for careers of their choice in this
field of human services. The basics include those things that police
officers, lawyers, and corrections officers need to do thier jobs:
professionalism, fairness, justice, trustworthiness, and respect for others
as well as self-respect.
