What is AFJROTC?

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) is 
a high school citizenship and leadership program. AFJROTC is
taught at over 900 high schools in the United States and
overseas. World-wide enrollment in the proram stands at nearly
120,000 students.

How much does it cost to join Air Force Junior ROTC?

There is NO COST involved with joining JROTC.  All uniforms, 
ribbons, insignia, and course materials are furnished free of
charge. Students may occasionally need enough money to cover a
meal during a field trip or an extracurricular event.

Does a cadet have to serve in the military after participating in JROTC?

Absolutely NOT!  AFJROTC is a citizenship and leadership program 
established by the U.S. Congress. There is NO military service
obligation. AFJROTC instructors are not recruiters. We are
retired military personnel employed by the Henderson County
School Board as full-time faculty members.

Does JROTC count for high school graduation?

Yes, cadets who take JROTC earn both wellnes and elective credits 
that count toward high school graduation.

What are the benefits for students who want to enter military service?

Cadets who complete two or more years of JROTC and then enlist in 
the armed forces may receive as much as two additional pay grades
after basic training. In short, this extra rank and extra pay
may equate to as much as $3,000 per year in annual salary.

Can AFJROTC cadets receive college scholarships?

Yes, seniors who are enrolled in AFJROTC may compete for college 
scholarships which could pay for as much as 2, 3, or 4 years of
college tuition. Previous graduates of LHS AFJROTC have received
scholarships of as much as $100,000.00.

What actitivities can AFJROTC cadets participate in?

There are many fun activites that cadets may participate in to 
include model rocketry, rifle drill team, saber team, color
guards, field trips and community service projects. JROTC holds
a Christmas Dance and Military Ball each year. Additionally, our
unit takes at least one field trip per semester to
events/locations such as the Thunderbirds airshows or Space Camp.

Can AFJROTC really make a difference in a student's development?

AFJROTC cadets develop leadership skills and self confidence 
which will help them no matter what they do in life. Nation-wide
studies have proven that Junior ROTC cadets have less discipline
problems, more respect for authority, and higher graduation rates
than non-JROTC students.
