FICTION BOOK REPORT
This book report is a major portion of your reading grade for the second nine
weeks. It will be worth 200 points. If you have ANY questions about this
assignment, ASK!
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a fiction book.
The book must be at least 100 pages.
It can’t be a book you have read before or have had read to you.
If you are reading a book now (but are not finished) and want to use
it, see me.
The book must be approved by me by 11-16-09 (this will be for a
grade)
Completed project will be due on Tuesday, 12-8-09
Your project will be graded on whether or not you meet the
requirements listed below and the quality and creativity of the work.
Your parents can HELP (make suggestions, help gather supplies, etc),
but you must do the majority of the work. They are there only for support.
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS TO COMPLETE:
BOOK REPORT OPTIONS:
Book Report in a Bag-This can be a lunch sized brown bag or a grocery
size brown bag. (A large grocery bag will work much better.)
*On the front: Draw a picture that represents the entire book. The picture
should cover the entire front of the bag. Also, write the title of your book
on the front. Include your name.
*On the back: Choose 2 of the following options to put on the back:
1. Conduct an interview with a main character. Write at least 6 questions
for the character and answer them as the character would. The questions and
answers should provide information that shows you read the book.
2. Write a letter to the author. Ask questions that you may still have
about the book, tell what you liked, didn’t like, etc. Make it
interesting! Must be at least 8 sentences.
3. Write a book review of your book. Must be at least 8 sentences. Tell
what you thought of the book and why, would you recommend it others, who
would like this book and why, give it a rating (5 stars, etc),etc.
4. Make a Venn diagram comparing 2 or 3 main characters in your book. List
at least 4 similarities for the characters and 4 differences for each.
*On the sides: Choose 2 activities to complete (one on each side):
1. List and define 10 vocabulary words from the book.
2. Write 8 “test” type questions from the book. Include the answers
either on the side or on a piece of paper inside the bag.
3. Write a diary entry that one of the main characters might have written in
the book. Be sure the diary entry relates to the book and shows details of
the book. Must be at least 5 sentences.
4. Write a different ending to your book. Must be at least 5 sentences.
*Inside: Put at least 8 items inside your bag that relate to your book.
These can be things you make or things you find around your house. The items
have to be varied. So, if you read Charlotte’s Web, you can’t put 8
different animals (even if they are 8 different animals) in the bag. ***If
you put something in your bag that will ruin (food, etc), be sure to tell me
when you turn it in! Do NOT put anything that is VERY important or very
expensive in the bag.
Book Collage-This must be on a firm (cardboard, poster board, etc)
material; can’t be on regular notebook paper; has to be at least as big as a
piece of 2 pieces of construction paper.
*Cut out words, phrases, pictures from magazines or newspapers that relate to
your book.
(You can use the computer to make words or pictures that you can’t find in
other materials.)
*Do not use the same picture or word over and over again.
*Glue or tape down onto a piece of firm material.
* The entire sheet should be covered! No blank spaces.
*Be creative! Use materials that are 3D (stick out from your paper),
pictures, different textures, etc.
****A one page, single spaced, typed (or 2 pages hand written) summary of the
book AND a plot diagram must be attached with your collage. Use page 4 in
your literature book to help you summarize or retell the story. You could
also include the answers to the following questions as part of your summary.
1. What was your favorite part of the book? Why?
2. What part would you change if you could? Why?
3. Did you like the ending? Why or why not?
Book Summary -All this should be completed on one page for each
chapter! (So if your book has 20 chapters, you should have 20 pages.) ALL OF
THIS OPTION CAN BE TYPED.
*Use computer paper or construction paper. Bind together in some way
(staple, hole punch and tie with string, use a report folder, put in a 3
prong folder, etc). Put your name and the title of your book on the front
cover...you can decorate the front cover if you like.
*Summarize each chapter of your book. Each summary should be at least 5
sentences.
*Draw a picture of an important scene for EVERY chapter.
*Give EVERY chapter a new title.
*On a page at the end, answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What was your favorite part of the book? Why?
2. What part would you change if you could? Why?
3. Did you like the ending? Why or why not?
4. List the main characters.
5. Tell the main conflict and the resolution for that conflict in the story.
Tell what kind of conflict it is.
6. What is the setting of your book?
**PARENTS: Fill out the bottom portion and return to school. Keep the top
for reference. PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, CALL OR EMAIL ME AS SOON
AS YOU THINK OF THEM, INSTEAD OF THE NIGHT BEFORE THE PROJECT IS DUE.
Chances are if you have a question, so will other parents and that will help
me clarify points that are vague.
Happy reading!

***I have added a new page to the website. Check out the
PowerPoints/Handouts page. This is a page that has PowerPoint presentations
that we've done in class to make foldables. This is a great way for your
child to make up this work without having to come in before or after school.
I will also occasionally put handouts on that page for students who are
absent. I hope this helps with the make-up work issue. If you have
questions, concerns, or suggestions, please let me know.***
