MARCH 31, 2008- THE METROPOLITAN NASHVILLE EDUCATION FOUN DATION

The Metropolitan Nashville Education Foundation, the charitable arm of MNEA, awards scholarships each year to outstanding high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in public education.  Scholarships are awarded to graduates of MNPS in amounts of up to $3,000 ($1,500 per semester).

MNEF invites students at your school to participate in our scholarship program.   Students should fill out the application form online at

Duke University has two pieces of exciting news to share with you.

  1. Parents whose income totals $60,000 or less no longer have to contribute financially to their child's education. For families of $40,000 or less, they have eliminated student loans, and reduced them for families with incomes up to $100,000.
  2. All of their merit scholarships now provide full tuition, room, board, and fees, a value of almost $50,000 a year. They do nor require any application for their merit scholarships-All applicants are automatically consired.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION The Pearl High School Heritage Classes Foundation is offering a $1,000 Scholarship to qualifing students to be deposited by the Scholarship Comittee in the recipient's student account at their chosen college or university. MARCH 11, 2008- NASHVILLE BAR ASSOCIATION

2008 HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM-

The Nashville Bar Association is seeking the best and the brightest young minority high school students for participation in the 2008 High School Summer Internship Program. The primary focus of the high school Summer Internship Program is to expose minority junior and senior high school students to the legal profession. Law firms, corporate legal departments, and government offices are asked to hire one (1) or more minority students as runners, filing wonderful1nderfulclerks, or administrative assistants.

The program is beneficial to students interested in a legal career as it will provide students with (i) direct and immediate access to the legal field; (ii) a paid 7 week internship with a legal employer; (iii) unparalleled networking opportunities with career-minded peers and lawyers; and (iv) mentors in the legal community.

The program is open to minority students who will graduate in May 2008, and also those who will enter the 12th grade in the fall of 2008. Candidates for internship positions must demonstrate their abilities and commitment to the program by meeting the following criteria:

  1. Submission of a program Application, including a written essay demonstrating the applicant's goals; the topic of the essay should be "Why are you interested in a career in law? How do you think the 2008 High School Summer Internship Program will help you achieve your goal?"
  2. Submission of two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors or prior employers;
  3. Maintenance of a solid "C" average or better in school and a good attendance record;
  4. An interview with the Program Selection Committee; and

MARCH 4, 2008- DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Do you want to become a fashion designer? Your work could earn you up to $6,000 in scholarship money to the International Academy of Design and Technology (the Academy) of your choice and an opportunity to fly to Chicago and have your garment featured in the Academy’s IMAGINE fashion show.

How to enter

Anyone who is a high school senior and a legal resident of the United States can submit an original sketch and fabric samples to a local Academy campus of their choice (Chicago, IL, Sacramento, CA, Schaumburg, IL, Seattle, WA, Las Vegas, NV, Nashville, TN, Tampa, FL, Orlando, FL and Detroit, MI).
Contest Application & Rules

This is a skill contest.

There is no purchase or payment necessary to enter or win. Both the local finalists and the national winner will be determined by a panel of judges, based on the quality of the sketch, fabric samples and inspiration statement, best demonstrate their desire to become a fashion designer.

Selection Process

A finalist from each campus will be chosen and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to that local campus. The ten local finalists will be then be entered into the national competition with a chance to win an additional $5,000 scholarship to their local campus. In addition, the national winner will complete their garment based on specifications and have it worn in the Chicago Academy's IMAGINE fashion show on May 15, 2008. The winner also will receive a 3 day, 2 night expense paid trip along with VIP access to the Chicago Academy's IMAGINE fashion show in Chicago.

The AFS Arabic Summer Language Institute is designed to give you an intensive introduction to Arabic and immersion into Egyptian culture. And their offering 30 full-tuition scholarships.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience is for students with fewer than two years of high school level Arabic instruction who are committed to continue studying Arabic upon completion of this program through independent study, high school or college classes, or even by starting an Arabic language club.

MARCH 3, 2008-ALPHA DELTA KAPPA

The Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority will award a $1,000.00 scholarship to a college-bound high school female for the fall of 2008.

  1. Competition for the scholarship is open to any high school senior female planning to attend an accredited four-year university/college for the first time in the fall of the 2008-2009 school year. Eligible students must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and must plan to enter the field of education.
  2. All applicants must submit the following:
  • A 500-750 word autobiography describing academic and career interests, awards, and extra-curricular activities and resume (if available).
  • Include why you plan to study education.
  • Two letters of recommendation from high school faculty members who are familiar with the student's work and career interests.
  • Official high sc hool transcript including ACT and SAT results.
  • Photos suitable for newspaper use (3 prints) with note attached including name, address, and phone #

All materials must be type written and double-spaced. Materials will not be returned

  1. Completed applications must be received by March 28, 2008. If you desire confirmation that your application materials have been received, please, send a self-addressed stamped envelope. All finalists must appear for a formal interview. The recipient will be notified by April 28, 2008. The scholarship will be awarded upon proof of enrollment to the ADK treasureer that the winner is enrolled in the 2008-2009 fall semester.
  2. The recipient is invited to attend the April 28, 2008 meeting of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. The meeting will be held at TBA. The winner will be notified of the date upon receiving the scholarship. The recipient will be asked to give a short presentation to let the members know more about her college and career goals.

  1. Student must have maintained a minimum academic average of 80.

FEBRUARY 25, 2008- TSU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, NASHVILLE CHAPTER

The Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee State University Association is offering scholarships in the anount of $1,500 to deserving students who need financial assistance. At the beginning of each semester during the 2008-2009 school year, seven hundred and fifty dollars($750) will be deposited at the office of the Vice President for Business and Finance for each scholarship recipiant.

Studnets graduating in the spring of 2008 and are interested in making application must meet the following criteria:

  1. Plan to attend Tennessee Sate University in the fall of 2008 and have submitted an application for admission as a full-time student (with the required qualifications).
  2. Submit an application for this scholarship that has been completed on both sides.

FEBRUARY 25, 2008-PENN UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

Penn recently announced far-reaching new financial aid initiatives that will eliminate loans for financially eligible undergraduate students regardless of famliy income, making it possible for students from a broad range of economic backgrounds to graduate debt-free. These new initiatives affect students who will be enrolled as undergraduates in September 2008 and expand on Penn's commitment to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need.In the fall of 2008, students from families with annual incomes of less than $100,000 who qualify for need-based aid will receive loan-free aid packages, regardless of family income level.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, they are eliminating the Penn-specific application. Students may apply to Penn using either the Common Application (www.commonapp.org) or the Universal College Application (www.universalcollege app.com).

FEBRUARY 22, 2008- BETA THETA PI

The John Reily Knox Scholarship is given by the Beta Theta Pi chapter at the Univeristy of Tenn. The Beta Theta Pi is dedicated to helping young men become successful in all of their worthy endeavers. In an effort to further their cause, the men of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at UT are offering two scholarships valued at $250 each to two male UT students. This scholarship is based on leadership, and community service.

The completed application, along with the required transcript should be returned to: 1844 Fraternity Park, Knoxville,TN 37916. The application packet needs to be postmarked no later than SATURDAY, JULY 23rd, 2008. FEBRUARY 22, 2008- NASHVILLE AUTO-DIESEL COLLEGE

PURPOSE:

To provide a $1,000 tuition to a high school senior with strong technical aptitude to pursue a career in the transportation technology field.

WHO MAY APPLY:

Any member of the current high school graduating class who, in the opinion of the school administration, has demonstrated a sincere desire for self-improvement and meets the stipulated eligibility requirements outlined below.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant must

  1. Be a graduating member of the current year senior class in good standing.
  2. Complete a scholarship application.
  3. Be selected by a Committee comprised of respective Guidance Couselors and Instructors from the receiving high school.
  4. Awarded students must enter NADA by SEPTEMBER 30, 2008.

CRITERIA:

The primary basis for awarding a scholarship is the student's performance or "potential performance" in an educational program judged by a committee of Guidance Counselors and Insructors from the participating high school. (note: members of the scholarship committee are not affiliated with Nashville Auto-0Diesel College or any of its employees.)

AWARDS:

One scholarship may be awarded per high school. Final winners will be entitled to a $1,000 tuition scholarship of instruction at Nashville Auto-Diesel College. No cash or other form of award will be substituted and scholarship awards are not transferable.

  The scholarship application process for the above scholarships begins with this memo. This year the process will be streamlined with one application used for all five scholarships. Students will need to complete one application checking each scholarship for which they qualify.  The requirements for each scholarship are as follows:

 

        The John Harper Harris Scholarship, a $500 award being given for the 35th year, requires each school      to    select only one student to submit to the Guidance & Counseling Services for district competition.

 

        The Charlotte and Elbert Brooks Scholarship, awards this for the 26th time, established to reward                   academic excellence and service to school and community.  Students must be in the top 10% of the class to          apply.

 

        The Charles O. Frazier Scholarship is open to students in the top 20% of the class who have outstanding             service to school and community. 

 

        This G. Hugh Waters Scholarship, a $500 award is open to any student in the top 25% of the class who is          a child of a Metro Schools employee.

 

        The Nettie Adams James Scholarship for $1,000, established by Ethel James Boswell in memory of her  mother, rewards achievement and citizenship to school and community.  Students must be in the top 25% of   the class.

 .  All applications should be sent through the senior counselor at the school to Sarah Eldridge at Wright Middle School by April 1st.

1.     A legibly written or typed personal data form.  All written material must be in blue or black ink.

2.     Official copy of transcript.

3.     Record of test scores, ACT and/or SAT.

4.     A legibly written or typewritten 150-200 word essay regarding service to your school or community.  This should detail a project you have been involved in at school and how it has affected you.  A separate paragraph should explain your financial need and how this scholarship will help further your education.

5.     Two letters of recommendation.

6.     Signatures of applicant, parent/guardian, principal, one teacher, and counselor.

2.     The screening committee is composed of the six Area Counselors.

 FEBRUARY 20, 2008- TENNESSEE BOARD OF REGENTS

The Tennessee Board of Regents will present the Otis L. Floyd Scholarship to a TBR university student for academic year 2008-2009. When funds are sufficient, the scholarship is given annually to an in-state- student who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance in high school and committed himself/herself to a career in teaching and /or public service. The award alternates on an annual basis between the two-year and four-year institutions. This year, each TBR university is eligible to nominate one member of its 2008 entering freshman class (including 2008 Summer returning Fall) for consideration.

The deadline to receive all materials is MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2008, with the award announced by mid-April. Institutions are encouraged to search among their applicant base for next fall and select the best person to represent the institution in the final selection pool.

THE ELIGIBLE STUDENTS MUST:

  • be a Tennessee resident
  • have a minimum High School GPA of 3.5
  • have a minimum composite ACT score at the 90th percentile or above (based on institutional scores taken from a composite of the Fall 2001 class)

TO BE CONSIDERED, THE STUDENT MUST:

  • submit a portfolio of not more than 7 pages that evidences their involvement in leadership activities, community activities, and reflects the student's creative potential
  • submit a one-page, single-spaced essay that addresses personal and career aspirations
  • submit a copy of the high school transcript

The award will cover in-state tuition and fees, the cost of room and board or in the case of a commuting student, a $1500 allowance per semester in lieu of room and board costs, a $250 book allowance per semester, and a stipend of $500 per year. The award can be renewed for a maximum of eight semesters or until the bachelor's degree is completed (which ever comes first), provided that the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA, a full-time course load (minimum of 12 credits hours per semester), and continues to be involved in institutional and/or community service activities. It is the responsibility of the institution to verify eligibility based on GPA and maintenance of full-time status. The student will be asked to provide documentation of service activities when applying for renewal of the scholarship.

FEBRUARY 20, 2008- THE METROPOLITAN NASHVILLE EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Metro Nashville Education foundation, the charitable arm of MNEA, awards scholarships each year to outstanding high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in public education. Scholarships are awarded to graduates of MNPS in amounts of up to $3,000 ($1,500 per semester).

MNEF invites students at your school to participate in our scholarship program. FEBRUARY 20, 2008- SAINT THOMAS HEALTH SERVICES AND LIPSCOMB UNIVERSITY

Saint Thomas Health services and Lipscomb University have partnered to create the Saint Thomas Health Services Nursing Advantage Scholarships. The Catholic, not-for-profit health system will provide $16,000 annual scholarships for up to five incoming students per year for Hispanic students preparing for careers in nursing at Lipscomb. The term of the partnership is 2008 through 2011.

Lipscomb nursing program offers a unique opportunity for Hispanic students: a curriculum that blends five semesters of outstanding faith-based academics with three semesters of clinical educational experiences at Vanderbilt University's School of Nursing. Scholarship recipients will complete at least one additional clinical rotation at Saint Thomas Health Services hospitals and will pledge to work at Saint Thomas for two years upon graduation.

Qualifications

Academic Excellence: One of the first considerations in awarding a scholarship is your GPA. The minimum qualifying GPA for any Wall of Excellence award is 3.0.

Leadership: How do you demonstrate your leadership? Are you a member of a business and professional group associated with the College of Business? Are you in student government for the University?

Citizenship: Have you collected food for the hungry? Helped feed the homeless? Tutored learning disabled children? If so, you have proven qualities of a good citizen. These are the same qualities that today's civic minded companies search for when hiring new employees. Therefore, we encourage you to develop these qualities as you develop your professional skills

Enrollment Status: All awards depend on available funds and are based on full-time enrollment. The College of Business may modify or cancel this award if your application contains incorrect information; you do not enroll full-time. If there is a change in your eligibility, you may receive a revised award.

RECIPIENT EXPECTATIONS & GUIDELINES

A. Recipient Expectations: As a College of Business scholarship recipient you are in the perfect position to serve as an Ambassador. In an effort to effectively promote your success, it is the expectation of the Review Committee that you 1) acknowledge the Donor of your scholarship; 2) attend functions or participate in workshops targeted towards awardees; 3) participate in other activities designed to provide you exposure to the corporate community and environment.

B. Essay questions: Demonstration of Leadership and Citizenship and Career Goals Statement.

1. Leadership and citizenship are critical qualities in today’s business environment. Award recipients should reflect these qualities. On a separate sheet of paper, write a statement in essay form describing your leadership and citizenship experiences. Include any involvement in campus or community activities. Participation in a College of Business student organization is helpful but not necessary.

2. We would also like to know more about your career goals. On a separate sheet of paper briefly tell us in essay form how you plan to use your business degree to further your career goals.

B. Application Packet

Return application packet to the College of Business. Completed packet includes 1) a current resume; 2) the names and contact information of two faculty members that we may contact for references. College of Business faculty strongly recommended but not necessary; and 3) your response to the two essay questions above. Your application will be considered incomplete if all required documents are NOT submitted and will not be considered for an award.

JANUARY 29, 2008- MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY- BIOLOGY MAJORS

The Biology Department at MTSU will offer four scholarships for 2008-2009. Two scholarships will be for $1500 each, one for $1000, and one for $500. Selection will be based on a competitve examination given to high school seniors over biological principles and concepts. EACH SCHOLARSHIP IS RESTRICTED TO INCOMING FRESHMAN BIOLOGY MAJORS ENTERING MTSU FALL 2008.

The examination will be given at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008, Davis Science Building, Middle Tennessee State University. All contestants are requested to register by calling the Biology Department at 615-898-2847 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. any weekday, or by return mail. There is no registration fee.

JANUARY 29, 2008- THE PINK HATTERS "LADIES OF VISON" CHAPTER- 2008-2009 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The purpose of the "Ladies of Vision" scholarship award is to provide financial assistance to a graduating high school minority female.

JANUARY 29, 2008-THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE- CHATTANOOGA- MATH DEPARTMENT

The Marjorie Watson Mathematics Scholarship is intended for an incoming freshman attending the University of Tenn. at Chattanooga who majors in mathematics. This is a $5000 scholarship, with $2000 awarded in the freshman year, and $1000 awarded for each of the sophomore, junior, and senior years. Renewal of the scholarship for the sophomore, junior, and senior years is subject to the recipient maintaining his or her math major status, a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.5 mathematics GPA computed at the end of the academic year, and normal progress towards a mathematics degree.

Application materials should include:

  1. Letter of application affirming an interest in a mathematics degree.
  2. Two letters of recommendation affirming the applicant's mathemathics ability, at least one of which must be from a recent mathematics teacher.
  3. Supporting materials, which should include ACT/SAT scores and high school transcript.
