ABC's of Kindergarten

 A

Attendance- Attendance is very important at Byars Dowdy. We feel attendance is crucial to success in school. Please have your child here as often as he/she is able.

Arrival- Car riders will be dropped off in front of school. Please have your child ready to get out before you get to the front of the car line. Adults are stationed to guide all children in the morning.

Allergies- If your child has any allergies please let me know. This is especially important for food allergies.

Awards- Award Days occur every nine weeks. You will receive notification if your child is receiving an award. Not every child gets an award every time.

B

Breakfast- Breakfast is served daily. The cost and choices are published on a monthly menu. Please ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast daily either at school or home. We do not have time for breakfast to be eaten in the room.

C

Change of Clothes- Each child should have a change of clothes including underwear, a top and bottom. Please keep in a baggie in your child’s backpack.

Conferences- Parent/Teacher conferences are held each fall. If you need to schedule a meeting other than this time, let me know.

D

Daily Folders- A take home folder is sent each day to let you know about your child’s behavior. I will send any notes or important papers via this folder. Please check it each night and initial on the date.

Dismissal- Car rider dismissal is in the front. Please allow us to bring your child to the car and do not motion for them to come alone, blow horn, etc. This is a very busy and stressful time and we want each child to get home safely with the right person.

Distractions- Do not allow your child to bring toys, blankets, games, stuffed animals, cell phones, makeup, etc. to school. I will take them up until the end of the year.

E

E-Mail- I am easiest to reach by email. My email is argoa1@k12tn.net

Excuse notes- Each time your child is absent please send an excuse note (from you, doctor, etc) in your child’s note/money pouch letting me know reason for absence.

F

Fundations- Fundations if the program by which we teach letters, correct formation and sounds and build words.

Field trips- Kindergarten goes on 2-3 fun and educational field trips each year. A permission note must be signed and money.

H

Hands on- Kindergarten is very hands on! For this reason your child may not have a great deal of worksheets to show you. Also, there may not be make up work to send if your child misses school.

I

Independent- In Kindergarten we strive for independence! These means walking to class on your own, using restroom without help, dressing self, keeping up with belongings, etc. I realize it is hard to let go of your babies, but these things are important.

J

K

K-SMART- This is our daily physical education program. Children participate in activities designed to develop pre-reading and reading skills while getting in physical activity.

L

Lunch- A menu is sent home monthly with lunch choices and cost. Children may bring their lunch also. Microwave/ refrigeration services are not available. We also ask no glass bottles and NO CAFFEINATED/CARBONATED BEVRAGES! Parents may join students for lunch.

Label- Please label personal items such as backpack, sweatshirts, jackets, hates, gloves. These are your child’s responsibility and I will not be keeping up with them or looking for them.

Lost and Found- Our school has a lost and found. If your child has lost an item, please check the lost and found before or after school.

Lice- A lice check is performed on each child weekly. If lice are found, your child cannot return until they are lice free.

M

Money- Any money (field trip, lunch, book order, etc) must be in an envelope with your child’s name and purpose of money. If you write a check, you do not need an envelope- just indicate child’s name and purpose for money on check. This should be placed in the pouch I have provided in your child’s daily take home folder. I will not take money that is not correctly sent and labeled.

Medicine- All medicine must stay with school nurse. This includes cough drops, itch cream, etc. It is helpful to know any medication your child takes so I can be aware of side effects that I may see in the classroom.

N

New Information- If there are changes in address, phone number, custody, etc. please keep me and office informed.

Newsletter- I send home a weekly newsletter letting you know what we are learning, important events, etc.

O

On time- We expect every child to arrive and dismiss on time. Children that are not in my room by 7:50 must have a late slip regardless of reason. Please be prepared to pick up your child at 1:50.

P

Parties- We love to celebrate birthdays! Please let me know a few days in advance if you are sending a treat for the class.

PTO- We have a wonderful PTO at Byars Dowdy. They do many great things for our school. You can help them by volunteering, supporting school fundraisers, etc. Our PTO also collects Box Tops (found on many grocery products), Coke Codes (found on Coca-Cola products) and used printer cartridges so send them in!

Q

R

Recycle- We recycle paper in the green bin in front of the school. The money raised comes back to Byars Dowdy.

Report cards- Report cards are sent home each 9 weeks.

Rest time- We rest for 20 minutes daily. All children are expected to lie quietly on their mats. Please do not send towels, blankets, toys, etc.

Recess- We play outside daily (weather permitting) for 20 minutes. If your child is well enough to come to school, they are well enough to go outside. If your child is not appropriately attired (for example, jacket in the winter) they will not be allowed to go out.

S

Snack- Each family is asked to send one bag/box of a healthy snack (not individual sizes). Our supplies may need to be replenished sometimes and ask that since everyone eats, everyone contributes.

T

Tardy- If your child is tardy, they must have a late slip. Children should be in my room by 7:50.

You are so important! Your support of your child (and their teacher) is so important to their success, and at Byars Dowdy we want every child to succeed! Please be an active participant in your child’s education by asking them questions about school, helping with homework, volunteering at school, coming to after school events, etc. I will do everything I can to help your child succeed, but your support is crucial, and very appreciated.
