About the Class

Welcome to a new year at Coles Ferry! I hope your child is excited about
being in first grade. We will learn all kinds of fun things this year!
I believe that with your involvement your child will attain a higher level of
success this year. This partnership of home and school can provide him/her
with learning opportunities and memories that will last a lifetime. Please
feel free to send a note or schedule a conference at any time. (#443-1946)

Your child will be taking home a folder full of work/notes everyday. Also
in the folder on Mondays will be a letter from me telling you what we are
studying for the next week and the homework your child will have. Please take everything out and
look at it, and send the folder back every
day. It is imperative that you check your child's backpack.

We will be doing a lot of reading and writing activities centered around
real life experiences this year. A variety of reading materials will be
introduced to your child. Also we will learn using "Themes" in Science and
Social Studies that will periodically change. In Math we will use
manipulatives to enrich learning. This brings me to the point that I will
only send homework home that is meaningful.

A small amount of homework will be assigned every week. This will include
reading materials such as "home readers".

The most important thing you can do this year for homework is READ! Please
read with your child every single night. Studies show that 15 minutes per
night will make all the difference in your child's learning. You may choose
to read to him/her, or he/she can read to you. This should be a time of fun
and enjoyment, and you will be amazed at the benefits this will have for your
child! Your investment of this time can mean a world of difference in your
child's education and love of literature.

LUNCH
Lunch money will be taken up each Monday and turned into the cafeteria. Our
lunch time is 10:52.

BIRTHDAYS
If you would like to send treats for your child's birthday, please do.
Remember to send any other necessary supplies, such as plates, cups, or
napkins. We will be celebrating this year at lunchtime.

DISCIPLINE
We have a new school-wide discipline policy this year. More information will be sent home soon.
Also I send home a "smiley" sheet every day. It will tell you how your child's behavior is on that day.
Please sign and return every single day. Thanks!

WISH LIST
There are certain items that the classroom will need on a regular basis
throughout the year. Please don't feel that you have to, but if you would
like to donate, thank you!--water bottles, snacks, school supplies, small toys for the treat box.

WATER
I would like for the students to have water on the desk. Studies show that
hydration increases brain function. They will be sent home at the end of the week for washing.
Please send a new bottle every Monday. Please do not send in anything other
than clear water for everyday use. We don't want any colorful spills.

P.E.
Please note that on P.E. days every child needs to have a pair of tennis
shoes. Our P.E. teachers will not allow any student to participate without
them. It does not include sandals, flip flops, or crocs.

SCHOOL TIME
Please make sure your child is at school at 7:50 each day. I start
instruction at that time and do not want your child to miss anything. Mrs. Gwyn Jennings and I will be
team teaching this year. Your child may spend some time with her in a group. We are both very
excited about this because it will allow us to make sure each child is on his or her individual level in
reading and math. More information will come later!

NUT FREE CLASSROOM
This year there is a student in our class who is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts (almonds,
cashews, walnuts, etc.). Any contact will cause an allergic reaction. With that being said, please make
sure your child does not bring anything into our classroom that contains nuts (such as a snack).
Please wash hands also if your child has had anything with nuts for breakfast before coming to class.
Thank you for being understanding and working together on this!

If you have any other questions, please let me know. I am looking forward to
getting to know you and your child!
                                                Heather Graviss
