 Dear Parents,

I hope you had a chance to get outside this weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather! I love when the humidity is down!

The poetry folder will NOT be coming home tonight. The poem we were working on is somewhat difficult, so I decided to continue to work on it this week.

Homework folder is coming home. The first page is words your child should be able to read fluently. By that I mean they should not have to sound out each letter. The 2nd page, front and back, are skills we worked on and they should be able to complete on their own IF they take their time and read carefully.      Please encourage them to do their best work. Homework folders will come home on Monday. Please try to have them completed by Friday, but I understand if you don’t have time until the weekend, then Monday is acceptable.

Remember, no school for students Friday or Monday! Have a GREAT Labor Day! I hope you are off work!

Thank-you to all the parents that offered to volunteer in my class, to help with copying, cut-outs, etc., and the book fair. I feel so blessed to have a wonderful class of involved parents! Mrs. Hines, our Librarian asked me to share the following message: The Coles Ferry Elementary Library is using Volunteer Spot, a free online service, to coordinate volunteer activities in the library. Please click the link below if you would like to volunteer in the library during your child's library class time. One volunteer can make a difference."   http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/232345632726768054 If you don’t have a computer, I’m sure a simple phone call will do the trick also! : )

Thank-you to Ryan’s dad for bringing Rex (the dog) and Addison’s mom for bringing Nugget (the hamster). The children enjoyed their visits very much AND they seemed excited to write about them!

We will start reading groups this week! (It’s my favorite part of the day.) The poetry folder will come home Monday then I will start “Snuggle Up and Read” Tuesday evening. PLEASE let me know if the book I’ve chosen for our child is too difficult! This should be an enjoyable time-not a miserable daily event! If you have questions, please give me a call so we can discuss what’s going on!

Welcome to

Mrs. Glisson’s First Grade!

My name is Michele Glisson and I am looking forward to being your child’s teacher this year! I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and I graduated from MTSU.  (When the Titans play St. Louis, I cheer for the Titans!)  I completed my Masters Degree at Union University in December, 2005.  I have been teaching a† Coles Ferry since Fall of 2004. I have one daughter who is 17 years old; her name is Shelby.  I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and doing just about anything on the water.

First grade is quite different from kindergarten. We focus more on working independently as well as cooperatively in small groups.  We will be learning many reading strategies and how to use them to be better readers as well as work on comprehension. We will also be doing lots of writing. I am excited to use a brand new math series which is aligned with the new Common Core Standards. Our days and weeks will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for learning and growing.

Meet the Teacher Night  is Thursday, August 4th at 6pm, I will go over the policies and procedures and many of your questions will be answered. If you have other questions or comments, just send me a note or email me. My email address is glissonm@k12tn.net. More information and links can be found on the Coles Ferry website, www.colesferry.org.

I’m looking forward to a fun-filled year of learning with your child.

In His Love,

Michele Glisson
