Family/Community Engagement Plan

•	Parents are represented on system-wide and school committees as appropriate. By serving on
these committees they are given opportunities to provide input on a variety of issues including, but not
limited to, parent involvement issues and Title I programs.
•	Family Engagement Nights are held quarterly within the schools on a variety of academically
related topics.
•	Parenting Workshops are offered bi-monthly during the school year on a variety of topics. These
workshops are offered to every parent, guardian, and grandparent in the school system. The workshops
address a variety of issues that parents deal with on a consistent basis.
•	Survival English classes are offered twice per week to parents and community members whose
native language is not English. This allows these parents to feel more comfortable about participating
in their child’s education.
•	Survival Spanish classes are offered twice per week to teachers and community members whose
native language is not Spanish. This allows teachers to communicate with parents and students whose
native language is Spanish and helps them feel more comfortable about the school setting.
•	Each teacher within our school system has a web site on which pertinent information concerning
his/her classroom is posted. Each school’s web site includes parent links where parents can find
resources to help with their child’s education. Each teacher has a web site through which parent
communication is made easier.
•	The Family Resource Center holds quarterly Advisory Council meetings that involve school system
personnel, parents, and community members. At these meetings issues concerning parenting
workshops and ways that the school system can more effectively meet the needs of parents and
students are discussed.
•	Parents may learn about their child’s course of study and have access to all learning materials by
making a written request to the principal of their child’s school.
•	Parents may learn about the state’s curriculum standards for each grade level/subject by going to
www.lssd.org and then clicking on the ‘Instruction’ tab followed by the ‘Curriculum Standards’ tab.
