Welcome

Maple Grove School was built in 1954. At the time it was built, it consolidated several one room schools. We are located in the eastern part of Clay County, cut off from the rest of the county by Dale Hollow Lake. This isolation has helped to keep Maple Grove open through the years.

September News from Ms. Emily’s Room

Our Literature Circles are up and running! We have 4 groups reading 4 different books. One group is reading “The Hunger Games”, while another group is reading “The Face on the Milk Carton”. Mr. Popper’s Penguin” is being read by yet another group and our fourth group is reading “Where the Red Fern Grows”. Literature Circle meets once or twice a week to read, discussion, and complete the “Literature Circle Jobs”. The jobs are as follows: Discussion Director (leads the discussion for the group), Word Wizard (finds unknown words or unique words), Summarizer (summarizes what the group has read) and Illustrator (draws a scene from the book). Each person in the group has a job and the jobs change weekly. It is fun to hear all the discussions going on during this time.
We love using our new outdoor classroom for science lessons. We used the inquiry method to determine what plant life was placed in our classroom. We also did research to discover what we would need to ensure the plants would be healthy. Our next lessons for the outdoor classroom will be using weather equipment to observe and predict the weather. We will also study about erosion, acid rain, the water cycle and weathering.
In CIRCLE (Creating Individual Responsible Citizen Loving Everyone) we have been learning the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. We have discussion and reviewed Habit 1: Be Proactive and Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. Each student wrote a personal mission statement and learned how to make deposits in their personal “bank accounts”. During journal writing time, many students write how they are using these habits in everyday life.
Time is flying by and we are working hard to learn all the things we need before the end of the year. Please feel free to stop by and visit our classroom – stay all day or a few hours – you are always welcome!!!
