Homework

Our day begeins each morning with the students taking out their vocabulary
notebooks and copy the word for the day along with its definition in their
notebook. They will copy one word each day Monday - Thurdsday. On Friday
they will have a test over the four vocabulary words and their meanings.
They must also choose the correct vocabulary word to fit the context of a
sentence. They will also have some review items from the previous week. We
start with "A" words and continue through the alphabet. When we finish we
will add additional words to our list. The students have done exceptionally
well so far. I am very proud of the progress they have made in vocabulary
development.

Each Monday morning our Spelling words are copies in our agendas. I check
to make sure that the word list has been copied properly so that the
students will have the correct spellings of the words to study for their
weekly test on Friday. The students are expected to complete skills lesson
activities that go along with the unit. They will also do activities such
as alphabetize the word list, write sentences with the words, and play
selected games with the unit words.

In Reading each week we begin by introducing the story for the week.
Students are introduced to the vocabulary and high-frequency words which go
along with that story. Students are then responsible for writing the
definitions for the vocabulary words. In our Reading rotations we are doing
a variety of things. One group activity that students are really enjoying
is the Activity Book they have. Each student has a sketch pad. For each
story that we read they answer questions in regards to the title of the
story, author, main characters, setting and who their favorite character in
the story is and why. At the bottom of the page they will then draw a scene
from the story. They have done a good job thus far. I think they will be
proud of this little keepsake at the end of the year.

Most of our work is completed at school. Occasionally they might not finish
something and would need to carry it home. Students are encouraged to study
their Spelling words each day, as well as their new vocabulary words.
